How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Dynasty Warriors Origins is exactly what it needs to be. It’s a tight, aggressive return to form that refines the series’ strengths, trims some of the fat, and offers enough modern polish to feel relevant in 2025. It’s not going to redefine action games. It doesn’t want to. What it does instead is double down on what works: raw spectacle, satisfying combat, and a war-torn world teeming with power struggles, betrayal, and battlefield heroics. Whether you’re a veteran of the series or just craving some loud, cathartic carnage, Origins delivers.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins is one of the best disappointments I’ve ever played. The groundwork it lays could’ve been the basis of a genuinely amazing Dynasty Warriors game, but this one is so obvious about its corner cutting, and conflates “realism” with a lack of personality. The huge battles are impressive, general combat’s rather fun, and the parrying system works way better than I thought it would, so there’s a good wad of stuff to enjoy. I just wish Origins was an actual Dynasty Warriors game and not something so flavorless. ”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers thrilling action that looks great and performs wonderfully on the Switch 2. It's likely the most intense musou combat Nintendo gamers have ever experienced. It's also the most complex, and the management details will lessen the thrill for some players.”

“Updated game mechanics along with the changed style of characters and the end-to-end plot about a fictional hero give the developers a chance to attract a new audience.”

“Origins presents an excellent technical and mechanical basis from which the Dynasty Warriors can rebuild, and hopefully return to form in the wake of later entries in the series, like Dynasty Warriors 8, having fallen so short.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an exceptionally great game, but it lacks a greater attention to detail. Sure, the graphics are gorgeous, but why does everyone look almost like twins, differing only in their skin color? There are tons of weapons, each with a different style, but why are they acquired in such a weird way, through the story progression, where it doesn’t make any sense? Why does the game try to show that everything is diverse, awesome, and every little detail matters, but in reality, you only need to make six major decisions and the rest is just nonsense? Even though everything is so contradictory, it’s still a very good game, and if you love non-stop brawls and aren’t afraid to face hordes of enemies, this is for you, grab your steel wheels and go chop up your opponents. Because it’s actually fun.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins on Switch 2 is a super-solid port of a fantastic reboot for the franchise. The shift to focus on one protagonist and improvements in storytelling across the board result in a gripping adventure that delivers huge enemy numbers to slice and dice through, whilst also being careful not to lose players in a mess of historical names and events.30fps is a bit of a shame, but this is a super smooth and responsive 30fps - the good sort - making for a game that lands on Switch 2 in fine form and with plenty to offer hardened Musou and action fans alike.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a masterfully crafted game and easily the best entry in the franchise. It delivers a somewhat convoluted yet beautifully presented story, paired with deep and exhilarating combat that will keep you engaged for hours. The gameplay truly makes you feel like a combat demigod in Ancient China.”

“Wounded only by minor flaws, Dynasty Warriors: Origins for Switch 2 offers a banquet of content to those willing to follow its path of conquest to the top. From a grand narrative to addictive combat to music and visuals that deliver, it wins the war by succeeding on every front.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins is arguably the best Musou game ever. It masterfully blends the series' gameplay staples with classic RPG mechanics, while still retaining an impressively detailed story and expanding its contents to unprecedented levels, both in quantity and quality. Omega Force and Koei Tecmo managed to craft a new beginning for this niche genre, both for newcomers and veterans, which is only hampered by the proverbial repetitiveness of Musou games.”

“Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a departure from the long-standing series’ formula, but offers a worthwhile experience all the same. Combat is still flashy and fun, but Origins offers a more deliberate, measured approach to the fights that keeps things engaging for longer.”
