How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 89 | 16 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 99% | 95 | 95 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 98% | 94 | 91 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.7, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 189 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Radical optimism has been an anchor of what we do at VGG for years now, and to see that echoed in a game as fun and joyful as Hermit and Pig is always a good sign that we're on the right side with what we're doing here. A sign that figuring out a way forward with our community is more worth it than to hide away in the woods and buckle under the darkness of our world alone. Hermit and Pig is a bright light in an otherwise darkening industry and an easy recommendation for RPG fans of all kinds, especially Earthbound and Undertale lovers looking for another adventure to smile with.”

“Hermit and Pig is a lovely classic inspired RPG that I would suggest to anyone. It has charming characters, quirky humor, and a fun gameplay loop that only takes about 8 hours to finish. Oh, and you CAN pet the pig!”

“Hermit and Pig goes to unexpected lengths, and it’s a better and more timely game for it. The narrative is sharp, the battles immersive, and the characters rich. It’s a tightly packaged game that balances playfulness, wit, and bite across a rural community scratching out a way of life threatened by corporate greed. Hermit and Pig are unlikely but extremely likeable heroes that will endear any fans of offbeat, satirical RPGs.”

“Hermit and Pig knows what it wants to say, and it delivers that poignant message between bouts of silliness and self-depricating jokes that strike the perfect vibe for turbulent times.”

“Though Hermit and Pig wants to deliver a story-rich experience, it is sorely lacking in replayability and is overall an easy game to beat if you disable the Combos mechanic. However, if you’re looking for a cozy turn-based RPG that is a good time, then Hermit and Pig is an authentically entertaining experience from start to finish.”

“Hermit and Pig is a whimsical adventure RPG that kept me engaged throughout. The unique take on turn-based combat creates a sense of urgency, and I can only praise the decision to make conversation look like a battle. Even though combat became a bit repetitive for me after the halfway point, the story kept me engaged and made me laugh out loud. If you’ve ever thought about searching for magic mushrooms yourself, don’t! Stay inside and play this game instead!”
