How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

A tower defense strategy game shouldn’t work as well as this does, even if it’s upgraded with gorgeous graphics and hack-and-slash action. Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is one of the most surprising and unique games of the year so far for good reasons. Every part of this game, from unlocking and upgrading villager roles, to strategically placing them on the battlefield, and then jumping straight into the fight yourself is engaging and exciting. Even if you aren’t a fan of strategy or action games, this is enough of a blend that it still comes highly recommended.

Kunitsu-Gami is another unique game in Capcom's collection. It is very similar to the PS2-era project, which the company forgot to release for some reason. One of the most unusual projects of this year, successfully combining several genres, a mysterious mystical atmosphere and entertaining gameplay.

By the end, when there are half a dozen paths for the demonic horde to get to Yoshiro and end her life in three hits, the fact that it all seems manageable is a triumph of good, accessible game design. Kunitsu-Gami’s rural Japan is a place of natural beauty, of dance, of light and revelry in the face of darkness. There are very few games that have dared to convey this very culturally specific magic in such a distinctive and compelling way.

Kunitsu-Gami was a pleasant surprise. The combination of tower defense and action is innovative and fun. The art is certainly the highlight and will stay with you long after you finish the game. Capcom got it right, and I hope this is just the beginning of a new experimental era for the company.

Although some of you are probably still thinking that the price is too high and the game isn’t for you, I’ll tell you this: give the demo a try. The reality is that Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an incredibly original gem that’s worth every second of playtime. If you’re looking for something fresh in the gaming world, here it is. Some of the monsters might make you feel a little queasy, but that’s just part of the risk for a demon slayer and his priestess.

Kunitsu-Gami was a real surprise. A solid blend of strategy and action that incorporates aspects of Shinto and Japanese folklore to create a visually stunning experience. It's a great showcase for Switch 2, even if mouse controls might not quite work for everyone.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an artistic action game that hides behind the tower defence genre. The trailers cannot do this game justice and it’s a shame for people to pass on it if they think this is a very simplistic action game. There is depth and strategic thinking behind every mission and the only downside is the village management/repair segments. Capcom should be proud of this one.

Still, like its legion of dancers, Kunitsu-Gami has a good rhythm. The day and night cycles are paced smartly; there’s enough time to get your plan sorted out during the daytime, while still having to make tough decisions about what roles to assign to your villagers and what structures to have your carpenter fix up before the fight, and the battles themselves don’t overstay their welcome or feel punishingly long. The village building phase feels like an afterthought, unfortunately; it’s like doing busywork for musubi and other unlockables. Anybody interested in this game because of the village portions will most likely feel underwhelmed. If you’re looking for a stylish, challenging strategy game steeped in Japanese culture and tradition, though, Kunitsu-Gami is a dance you’ll want to learn.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a standout game in 2024 in how its different gameplay styles work surprisingly well with each other... With its gorgeous classic Japanese folklore aesthetic, it’s just as pleasing to look at as it is fun to play.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an interesting mix of action and tower defense strategy, with an impressive art direction and a charm that reminded me of old PS2 Capcom titles like Okami, although some gameplay issues and the first few tedious hours hold it back.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess isn't perfect, but every element of the game brings something never seen before and interesting. The game feels authentic, with great effort and love in representing a fascinating, japanese-folklore based world.
