How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.0, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 897 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

Demon Tides is a true love letter to the genre, joining the ranks with its own distinctive visual style. It’s fun, full of challenges, and mind-boggingly chaotic. Sure, the chat is a little questionable at times, but everything else you’d want from a 3D platformer is here. Ambitious and delightful.

I may harp about Demon Tides’ issues, but that’s only because I want this game to succeed. Fabraz continues to create some of the most interesting collectathons on the market, and not since A Hat in Time have I found myself so enthralled by a game’s frame-by-frame platforming mechanics. Like A Hat in Time, though, the jank is real. I wish the game’s colorful visuals and open-world design could shine properly, but performance issues and bugs often drag down the experience. And yet, the game offers far too much fun for me not to recommend it. I 100%’d everything in about 25 hours, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy every second.

Demon Tides is a stylish and ambitious platformer that shines in bursts, but is too often held back by its mechanical and technical shortcomings.

Demon Tides is a very fun platformer with charismatic characters and smooth movement. It’s the perfect spring or summer game to play just to get into the season and remind everyone to sit back and enjoy the waves sometime.

“Demon Tides” is more than a fantastic evolution of “Demon Turf”. It shows how platforming games can be both accessible for newcomers and still challenging to veterans by not gatekeeping its movement tools. Instead, it opts for an expression-based game, where you can leave your mark in the world. And, in return, it left its mark on me.

A few technical issues and camera problems aren't going to detract from the fact that Demon Tides is a 3D platformer fan's wet dream.

Demon Tides builds on the strengths of its predecessor while introducing fresh ideas: I love the moveset of Beebz, the islands constantly offer new challenges and the freedom it gives you makes the game a truly unique 3D platformer experience. With talismans and outfits plus loadouts you can create your own personalized gameplay experience, the fast travel feature makes exploring and completing the various islands even easier and the leaderboards provides additional motivation to replay certain sections. A few minor technical issues occasionally interrupt the flow but thanks to the manual checkpoints, which you can set yourself at any time, there are never any major frustrations.

Not a perfect adventure but close to it, Demon Tides gives you the freedom to explore to your heart’s content. Its expressive platforming is the alpha and the omega. Every level provides an opportunity to try out different ways to show off your increasing mastery of Beebz’s skills. In the end, that is what it is all about.

Demon Tides is an ambitious, often janky platformer that does its best to show inspiration from some of the greatest games in the genre, and ends up feeling a little bit bland because of it.

Demon Tides is a very good game for an independent company. It takes chances with size and freedom, gives you a lot of ways to move, and gives you one of the most fun open-world platforming experiences in recent memory. If you want an exciting, fun, and mechanically rich trip, this is the one you should go on.

There’s a lot to love about Demon Tides. Maybe it takes some time for the uninitiated to grasp Beebz’s moveset and, sure, it’s a little lacking in its combat department, but when you’re locked into exploring, jumping around and performing sick moves, it’s a treat. It’s so easy to enter some sort of platforming flow state when Ragnar’s Rock is built like a playground for expressive movement. Lean into the chaos, chase the schmovment, and you will absolutely get swept up in the joy of styling your way across Ragnar’s Rock as the little Beebz.
