How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“A visceral neon-lit nightmare where you hunt disguised monsters in a chaotic city. Possess humans, unleash blood-forged weapons, and uncover sinister truths in a relentless battle for survival.”

“Slitterhead is full of great ideas and some truly memorable examples of body horror despite not feeling like much of a horror game. Perhaps with more of a budget behind it, those positives could’ve been done justice, but sadly this isn’t the case. The possession gimmick allows for imaginative action scenes that are let down by repetition, lacking variety, and a bunch of less thought out gameplay that bogs the action down. Someone throw some money behind this concept, please. It deserves to be in a much better game.”

“In ten years, someone somewhere will most likely refer to Slitterhead as a hidden gem and a misunderstood masterpiece. In that distant future, maybe you'll agree. Or perhaps you won't. But the thing is - you don't have to wait for another decade to make this decision, Slitterhead deserves your attention right now.”

“An action game for those who miss the odd Japanese games of the PlayStation 3 era, which were mainly released by Sony Japan Studio. An unusual idea and an intriguing plot are combined with outdated graphics and clunky gameplay, everything is exactly as it should be.”

“That’s something that the Prototype games got right 15 years ago, in the exact era of gaming Slitterhead shares most of its design ethos with. Even when Slitterhead gets to its wilder stretches, and time travel enters the mix, the fundamentals fail its ideas early and often, making the relatively reasonable length of the thing feel so much longer and more arduous as a result. Slitterhead would have felt lackluster on the PS3, but it feels downright draconian now.”

“What it does share, though, is a similar idiosyncratic streak. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything else that plays quite like Bokeh Game Studio’s freshman work; it’s all about darting between hosts as you chip away at unsightly creatures through even more unsightly acts of manipulation. In a time where it’s increasingly easy to rag on AAA releases for playing it safe (something they mostly do to offset rising development costs), this game feels like a throwback to the creatively risky mid-budget titles of yesteryear that the industry has largely left behind. Slitterhead may have a lot of obvious shortcomings, but I’d generally rather play a messy splatter fest than an overly sterile bore, and this game is more than happy to paint everything red.”

“Slitterhead has 'cult classic' written all over it with its gritty atmosphere, unsettling creature designs and old-school appeal, though it lacks polish and a satisfying combat system.”

“Frustrating at times but fearlessly inventive, Slitterhead is an absolute must-play if you're looking for an original take on the survival horror genre. Serving as a spiritual successor to fan favourites like Siren, Gravity Rush, and Soul Sacrifice, this haunting tale about a body-hopping spirit, who uses humans as fodder to put a stop to the eponymous enemy, is a scintillating albeit occasionally undercooked debut from Bokeh Game Studios. Repetition and an overall lack of refinement do bring it down, but you'll be hard-pushed to find a more imaginative experience this year.”

“Slitterhead delivers an intriguing horror story and fast action, but its exploration sections feel watered down, lacking in player agency.”

“Slitterhead is unique. That is the biggest compliment I can give it. There are things here that I love. The mood of the game, the music, and the concepts. It just doesn’t mesh well into a cohesive experience. It feels stuck in the past, which is fine in some instances, but when it comes to its crimes, it really drags it down. I promise I will never forget this game, and it is included in Game Pass, so definitely give it a whirl if you subscribe, but at full price, I might wait a little while to take the plunge.”

“Behind the problems of a technological nature (and not), there is a title that transcends stereotypes and established ideas on more than one species.”

“It’s great that the game retains the nostalgic feel of '90s Hong Kong, but the gameplay itself feels like something from console generations past. While it may not suit everyone, those with the right taste might still find it unexpectedly enjoyable.”
