How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Mind Over Magnet is a great recommendation for anyone interested in game design, especially platformers. Despite its simplicity, there's a lot to learn from what's presented here, and it's quite enjoyable even for those just curious like me. The game fits perfectly into the portable console space, so there's no doubt that the Nintendo Switch is the ideal platform for playing.

It won't blow your socks off, but Mind Over Magnet will at least loosen your legwear with its incredible understanding of game design fundementals, a magnet gimmick that feels fresh, solid visuals that serve the gameplay perfectly, and music that I could listen to for hours. It won't last you too long, and it doesn't try to do anything super out of the ordinary, but it's a short and sweet game that hits a home run for every ball it's batting at.

Mind Over Magnet is an indie puzzle game based on magnetism. It's a simple yet ingenious idea that has allowed the creators to develop well-designed levels with a medium-high level of difficulty. Despite its short duration, puzzle lovers should definitely give this title a try thanks to its interesting and innovative game design.

Viewed only as a puzzler, Mind Over Magnet is casual, fun, enjoyable, and polished, but don't expect it to be memorable, surprising or even long. Those qualities will only be appreciated by those interested in seeing the game from the perspective of a solo developer's project tracing winding paths of learning, and problem-solving. This is the audience that will benefit most from exploring the game along with the creator's commentary contained in it, and the videos that portrayed the three-year development process.

Mind Over Magnet sure is an attractive game. On one hand you have some fantastic, innovative gameplay involving the laws of physics in the form of puzzles, yet this is repelled, rather than attracted, by the consistent complacency in not introducing new gripping mechanics, until a point where it’s too late.
