How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

SILENT HILL f is a triumphant return to the spirit of the series. It’s a masterpiece of atmosphere, storytelling, and sound design that proves the "Silent Hill" name is about a feeling, not a location. Ryukishi07 and NeoBards have crafted a truly disturbing and memorable psychological horror experience. However, this brilliant narrative core is trapped inside a frustratingly flawed game. It’s held back by clunky combat, an indefensible weapon durability system, and technical issues that break the immersion. This is a game you will love for its story and art, but one you'll have to fight against its own mechanics to see through to the end. It's a must-play for horror fans, but be prepared for the friction.

After many long years, Silent Hill has received its most exceptional installment, reintroducing the series to the Premier League of horror and regaining its reputation as the pinnacle of virtual terror.

SILENT HILL f is definitely not the best installment in the series, but of course it's not the worst either. The game has many good elements, such as the script, puzzles, and overall atmosphere, but the quality set by these elements is hampered by a weak combat system, terribly designed battles, and the loss of the initial atmosphere from the beginning of the story. It was nice to see something completely new in the SILENT HILL series, but I think sticking to the titular town made more sense.

Silent Hill f represents a strong return for the series, blending psychological horror and Japanese stories in a charming and frightening artistic style. Its events take place in Japan during the 1960s amidst mysterious atmospheres filled with tension and symbolism, with a tragic story written by Ryukishi07 in an escalating style that plants fear slowly, away from cheap jumpscares. The game features stunning graphics, meticulous details, and strange floral touches that add a distinctive character, while the soundtrack and voice acting enhance the sense of anxiety and loneliness. Furthermore, the exploration design maintains the dread of the atmosphere and encourages curiosity; while respecting the series' legacy, it presents a bold and innovative artistic vision that makes it a captivating psychological horror experience worthy of praise.

As a purely interactive experience, Silent Hill f is as uneven as it gets, honestly. But more than that - it's still a very interesting piece of art. Strange, multi-layered and mostly unique - in all the places that matter.

Silent Hill f takes risks, but that's a good thing. It leaves America behind to move the setting to the distant past and Japan. The result is a thoroughly authentic Japanese horror game. A horror whose themes may be more challenging for some players. And a horror that draws on Japanese myths, symbolism, and culture. However, it's also a horror that fans of the series, in particular, shouldn't overlook. It's an excellent action-adventure game that suffers from clunky combat mechanics, but this is compensated for by the overall atmosphere and storytelling.

Silent Hill f tells a very heartfelt story about abuse and feminism through the lens of the classic Survival Horror franchise. The title is very different from previous Silent Hill games but any fan of the franchise or horror in general will enjoy this title.

Combined with a narrative that feels like all the worst tendencies of YA manga playing out as po-faced as possible, even the stellar art direction and sound design can’t stop the game from feeling wasteful.

Silent Hill f has the quality and courage to finally break the curse cast upon the series. Moving away from the American town has brought a freshness and depth to the story that I haven't seen in the series since SH2, and changes to the combat system are working well. Silent Hill has finally found its way and emerged from the fog reborn. Disgusting, poignant, digging deep into the psyche. Wonderful.

Ryukishi07’s storytelling, Kera’s unforgettable monster designs, and the game’s willingness to challenge its players all come together to create something that feels both reverent and new. For me, Silent Hill f isn’t just the best new Silent Hill game, it’s a masterclass in Japanese horror, world-building, and narrative design. It’s chilling, thoughtful, and heartbreakingly beautiful. If this is the direction the franchise is heading, then the fog has never looked brighter.

Silent Hill f promises to be a divisive and experimental entry in the franchise, and that by itself is something to appreciate. Despite falling short in terms of combat system and ludic aspect, the game manages to hit the mark on what has always been crucial for the franchise: its narrative structure and artistic direction make this game a flawed yet unique must-play for every fan of psychological horror.
