How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

While the town building could have been better, it’s far from bad and just adds to a game that’d be stellar without it. An excellent RPG, through and through.

Octopath Traveler 0 offers a cohesive JRPG experience that focuses on the story and the building of the series' world, with a clear highlighting of the villains' motives and the diversity of their paths. The turn-based combat system relies on planning and grants the battles tactical depth, and the village reconstruction system adds a good sense of progress. Artistically, the game is characterized by an attractive 2D-HD style and strong music; however, its world is limited and suffers from weak exploration and frequent random encounters. Overall, it is an enjoyable and satisfying experience for fans of the series and storytelling.

In many ways, Octopath Traveler 0 feels like a 'victory lap' for the beloved series, remixing various elements that you're familiar with from the past games while introducing some interesting new ones to spice things up a bit. Importantly, this prequel does not feel like a proper Octopath Traveler 3, but that doesn't mean that it isn't still an incredibly good time and a much better JRPG than most genre peers.Even if it's a retread in some ways, though, an absolutely monstrous amount of content, interesting new gameplay elements, gorgeous visuals, and compelling storytelling all come together to make Octopath Traveler 0 a must-buy.

Octopath Traveler 0 holds on to the elements that made the originals great but isn’t afraid to experiment further. It freshens up the formula in ways that finally let its potential shine. Though pacing and some repetitive elements hold it back, it still carries the legacy of the series and shines as bright as ever.

This is a long game, but it earns its length. It respects your time, rewards your curiosity, and offers enough depth to keep things interesting from start to finish. If you’re an Octopath fan who skipped Champions of the Continent, this is an excellent way to experience its world in a far more complete form. And if you’re new to the series, Octopath Traveler 0 is a surprisingly strong entry point, offering a rich, memorable adventure that lingers long after the credits roll.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a massive game, with an abundance of content and exploration available. It relies heavily on a more strategic style of turn-based combat than previous entries, with interesting stories and characters in a nostalgic graphical style. However, there are times where the story becomes a touch too cliché and predictable. It certainly doesn't lack in polish, though, with a fantastic soundtrack and delightful HD-2D visuals and, apart from a few hiccups, it runs without issue. This is the perfect title to get lost in for hours and hours.

Despite the amount of melodramatic story to sit through in this 100+ hour adventure, the incredibly deep turn-based combat and HD-2D style more than make up for any plot threads that might put you to sleep.

The experience brings the series back to its roots while proving it can still impress with each new release, offering bold and mature storytelling and unique content. It respects the essence of Japanese RPGs while introducing modern gameplay systems for a more engaging experience than ever. A true masterpiece that shouldn’t be missed, especially now as a full-fledged release beyond mobile constraints.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is a great entry into the franchise and, surprisingly, an excellent conversion of a gacha game into something more enjoyable that doesn't rely on those crazy mechanics to hook the player.
