How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 48 | 65 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 77% | 72 | 157 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 61% | 61 | 3 |

“Captain Blood is obsolete in every way and now looks like an HD remaster.”

“Captain Blood is basically a lazy remaster of the 15 years old game. Except that original version has never been released.”

“The critical objections I raise here against Captain Blood are by no means trivial, but I’m still giving it a thumbs-up in the end. I’m glad this game hasn’t fallen into oblivion and that we can play it completely legally today. Plus, I really did have fun the whole time. I suspect that those who enjoy action titles from the turn of the sixth and seventh console generations, and don’t mind straightforward, arcade-style beat ’em ups, might feel the same way. If you can only stomach the hack-and-slash genre in its current, “cinematic” form, you can probably let this pirate ship sail right past you.”

“If you have a burning nostalgia for early 2000s action titles, you might be able to squeeze some semblance of enjoyment from Captain Blood, but even then, you've got to wade through tedious, weightless combat and bafflingly overlooked audio issues.”

“It’s nice that something that would otherwise “die” did not, so the developer behind Captain Blood should be applauded - but that doesn’t mean that the game itself is an easy recommendation. It’s a pirate-themed hack ‘n’ slasher that, aside from the HD textures, is stuck two decades into the past. In other words, it’s an entertaining ride, but a bit too repetitive and, most of all, forgettable, so it’s hard to recommended to anyone but its target audience and their nostalgia for the era this belongs to. Even they are advised to wait, however, because there are currently a couple of very annoying bugs.”

“The publisher argues that while Captain Blood might rate as a 4/10 today, it would’ve scored a 7.5/10 back in the mid-2000s. But let’s be honest, even if this game had launched on its original schedule, it would’ve still been panned. Broken mechanics don’t magically become acceptable just because they’re old. As someone who values game preservation, I respect the effort to revive lost projects, but that doesn’t excuse selling a fundamentally unfinished product, especially one that may never be properly fixed. Dodge Captain Blood like your character dodges non-existent i-frames.”

“While Captain Blood's development is an engaging tale, the same cannot be said for any aspect of the final product. The game fails to capture what made other hack-and-slashers so fun, nor does it provide any notable innovations. Even as just nostalgia bait, Captain Blood always ends up undermining itself thanks to lacklustre combat, a lifeless world and general glitchiness that pollutes the whole experience.”

“A game that should have released 20 years ago, Captain Blood is a generic hack-and-slash that does little to innovate. That said, it certainly has its charms, and there is some fun to be had.”

“Captain Blood is a curious relic, a patchwork resurrection of an era long past, one that struggles to find relevance in the present. Its brute-force combat and nostalgic appeal might offer fleeting moments of blood-soaked joy, but the weight of its technical flaws and repetitive design quickly quashes any sense of lasting engagement. It’s a game that wants to be remembered for its swagger, but instead, it’s a reminder of how games like this were left behind for good reason.”

“Captain Blood is a time capsule into the PS2 era of character action brawlers, this time with a pirate theme. While it doesn't excel at everything, at least the great fights are undeniably present.”

“Captain Blood's fascinating history makes its faults as endearing as they are annoying, but the act of playing it is surprisingly dull. Still, it is worth checking out for any game history enthusiast.”

“Captain Blood is an odd release as it feels like a relic of its original release context. This does leave it being a nostalgic experience for those old enough to remember this era of games, but there isn't much that isn't done much better by its influences. Releasing decades later actually does it a favour as it feels very different to the expansive open world experiences that dominate modern gaming. As a curiosity it makes for an interesting time but it mostly confirms why such games belong in the past. Not so much buried treasure, but it's certainly better than walking the plank.”
