How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Apartment Story builds tension stronger than many other games, but the downtime sometimes leads to it fizzling out. It tells a story about topics worth exploring deeper, but barely skims the surface. I felt that it had only begun to explore its potential in the end. Still, it doesn't overstay its welcome and is good for a single-sitting playthrough, which I always appreciate. If you're keen to explore the more experimental side of indie gaming, give Apartment Story a go. I think Blue Rider Interactive has something and I am fascinated to see where they go next.”

““Apartment Story” is a fantastic tale about our lives routine, monotony and the struggle to be an adult in the mid 2020s. It’s a strong showcase of how hard life can be, but if you look deep into it, you will find moments of peace, love and that every decision, no matter how big or small, will have an outcome in your life. You wont always be ready for it, but that’s okay. That is life, after all.”

“Apartment Story is a game that falls short of any and all expectations. There is a lack of any true tension in this horror game due to an uninteresting antagonist and lackluster resolutions, the gameplay is glitchy and gives the player no room to experiment, and the story is uninteresting due to a short runtime and a lack of any character development for its characters. As such, it is unable to fulfill its potential as a thrilling narrative experience.”

“Experimental, rough around the edges and lo-fi by design, Apartment Story isn't going to wow you in a technical sense, but there's still a certain charm to it. Mixing The Sims-like mood management with a gritty, dark story, it'll only take you a couple of hours to complete, and it'll be unlike anything else you've played this year.”

“I fear that saying any more would utterly spoil what is a tremendous piece of storytelling that could only be achieved via interactive media. Sure, you can tell this story via film, but I’m not sure I would have been as unsettled, nor would I have cared so deeply for Arthur. Apartment Story won’t be to everyone’s tastes, with retro graphics, little action, and minimal dialogue, this is auteur game creation that works because it’s so simple and devoid of any pretentions.”

“This instance aside, there are no serious bugs in Apartment Story. I wouldn’t recommend playing if your idea of cinematic games is a highly polished triple-A experience. But if you don’t mind a bit of jank, if you don’t care about bowls clipping through each other in the sink as you wash the dishes, then Apartment Story will spin you a fraught tale in which there’s as much tension in getting a shower as there is with your home invader.”

“Apartment Story is two ideas mixed together, and one of them works really well while the other drags the experience down quite severely. I can't help but imagine that the core concepts of an interactive home invasion that asks the player to make choices and deal with the consequences couldn't have made for an enjoyable and tense experience if it weren't for the confusingly repetitive and out-of-place sim elements that necessitate walking and waiting in-between everything interesting. At the end of the day, the good parts don't quite seem worth the bad, and it's difficult to recommend the title when technical issues are also holding things back.”

“Apartment Story sits apart from most narrative games for me. The big difference is the sim element. Having to do things like shower, cook, smoke, and pee really elevates the experience. Between the plot, the atmosphere, and the mechanics, I’m quite impressed. Although the story is pretty simple, it still draws you in. If you’ve got a few hours free, I highly recommend checking out Apartment Story.”
