How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Project Songbird is a game I think anyone in a creative industry should play, whether you’re a musician, a painter, a writer, a game developer, or someone in any field that is about making something. The game shares a prominent and important message about how many artists will push themselves so much farther than could ever be sustainable. This felt especially relevant in today’s world, where artists are being forced to compete with the existence of generative AI. In publishing Project Songbird, Rush and FYRE Games have made me want to create. Playing this game made me want to make the things that I want to make, and to not allow anyone or anything to make me resent doing the creative things I love.

A bold horror that never quite finds its own voice.

Project Songbird isn’t perfect, but it never tries to be. It knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver, and for the most part, succeeds. While clear gameplay flaws hold it back, atmosphere, storytelling, and a distinct identity make up for much of that. More than cheap scares, the game aims to evoke emotion, and, above all, leave something behind once it ends.

Project Songbird is a work that isn’t afraid to reveal its own uncertainties in order to establish a dialogue with the player. Dakota’s descent into a forest that is only seemingly safe becomes a parable about the difficulty of staying true to oneself when the world demands conformity. Despite some technical shortcomings, the overall impression remains positive thanks to the great attention to atmosphere and sound design. It is an adventure that does not merely aim to scare, but invites reflection, suggesting that true darkness does not lurk in the woods, but rather in the constant doubt that one is not good enough to pursue one’s dreams.

While this game has it’s pacing issues and no enemy variety, it compensates that with a captivating emotional story and a special atmosphere all glued together with good indie music

Project Songbird set itself the ambitious goal of being a playable A24 movie and in my opinion it definitely succeeded. The atmosphere remains incredibly dense throughout the entire game, keeping you on the edge of your seat and developer Conner Rush manages to create an artful realization of a deeply personal story. Even though the game doesn't utilize the latest hardware to the fullest and occasionally a texture is a bit blurry or objects pop in, the visuals still managed impressed me throughout the game. At some points I was completely taken by surprise and even if you think you've seen every trick in video games I'm pretty sure this horror title will surprise you too at one point or another.

We experienced a psychological horror journey with Project Songbird that blends a deep narrative with a cinematic approach, supported by an artistic direction and sound design that enhance the horror atmosphere. It’s an experience that encourages exploration to fully understand its events. Despite its short length, it can be a solid choice for fans of interactive psychological horror, though it may not appeal to those looking for deep gameplay mechanics.

In fully committing to its themes of artistic inspiration, trauma and self-doubt, Project Songbird shows a willingness to be emotionally raw and vulnerable, creating a real space for reflection and empathy. The psychological horror elements have a depth that slowly expands over the game's runtime, outshining its relatively straightforward combat and occasional technical problems. A nightmare is always distressing, but maybe there's beauty nestled within the pain.

Project Songbird is proof that even with a smaller budget, you can create a work that will be etched in the player's memory. It is a title for the more demanding player who, instead of hectoliters of blood, seeks depth and atmosphere. An interesting theme, top-notch sound and the persistent feeling that you are not alone make the game one of the more interesting indie horrors of recent times.

I mostly enjoyed my time with Project Songbird. The narrative is handled with care and earns its emotional weight without being spoiled here. The sound design and music deserves a lot of praise, and the voice cast and performances really sell the story being told here. However resource balance; bullets, painkillers, melee durability, occasionally tips toward overwhelming rather than tense. Some enemy encounters shift from scary into frustrating rather than maintaining dread. If you’re a scaredy cat like me, I’m sure you’ll also enjoy the roughly 5 hour journey into grief in the Appalachian mountains, and horror veterans might not get scared but are sure to get some fun out of trying to grab the no healing achievement as they stumble past mannequins and statues.

Project Songbird is one of the most interesting and well designed indie horror games of the year so far and shows the sheer range of the genre. Unlike the bombastic Resident Evil Requiem, Project Songbird is not afraid to be more contemplative and intimate in its portrayal of horror and trauma, the narrative carrying you through its puzzles and moments of real peril. Highly recommended for fans of horror and also anybody who appreciates game-making as an artform with a message to convey.
