How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

For Anno fans, it's a must-have. For new players, this is a great chance to dive into the series - the fascinating ancient Rome setting and the deep mechanics make it totally worth pushing through the initial learning curve. Anno 117: Pax Romana will be consuming my time for weeks, months, maybe even years to come.

Anno 117: Pax Romana doesn’t seek to rewrite history, but it reminds us why this series remains one of the cornerstones of the city-building genre. With its innovative design, striking visuals, and unmistakable Roman charm, it’s a confident step forward. One that may not reinvent the empire, yet still captivates anyone eager to build and expand its glory. It’s not a perfect empire, but it’s one that feels truly worth building.

Anno 117: Pax Romana marks a bold step for the series into a period that is iconic for strategy games. Fortunately, however, it doesn’t try to copy other titles and remains true to its unique identity. It offers a deep economic simulation, sophisticated city-building, and an atmosphere that draws you in. At the same time, it retains the addictive gameplay that made the series famous. For fans of the genre and the series, this game will undoubtedly become a time-sink.

“Anno 117” takes the best aspects about “Anno 1800” and polishes it to an unprecedented degree. Alongside a more in-depth second region and the addition of a research tree, deities, simple yet satisfying land battles and, of course, new productions chains, it’s a new gold standard for the franchise. I can see myself playing for years to come.

Anno 117 is, as a whole, a fine game that will allow fans of the series to enter a new era and enjoy mechanics that are more complex than those of its predecessor. The soundtrack is great, and the graphics are very pleasing to the eye. However, I feel that Ubisoft has played it a little too safe and lazy. Although I personally love Anno 1800, I didn't necessarily want the new instalment to be so similar to it.

If you love building sims or want something with more strategy than the usual management games, Anno 117 is worth your time. For me, it was a great introduction to the series and a smooth step into a more complex style of city building. It challenged me, taught me and kept me coming back. I am glad I gave it a chance.

Anno 117: Pax Romana is a game that knows how to pull you into its web of systems and challenges, yet it rarely leaves the kind of lasting mark that defines true genre classics. It attracts, entertains, and frustrates in equal measure. It’s good enough to deserve a chance, but not quite distinctive enough to be the kind of experience you’ll want to revisit for years to come.

Anno 117: Pax Romana isn’t a revolution for the series, but a well-crafted evolution of a proven formula. Fans of strategic city-building games, especially those interested in Roman history or the series itself, will find it tailored for them. The Roman setting goes beyond aesthetics, giving the game a unique identity. With the tech tree, cultural choices, freedom in customization, and a polished interface, it delivers a deep and satisfying experience that can easily consume dozens or even hundreds of hours.

Anno 117: Pax Romana brings the player to a time period not much explored in videogames, and certainly not in the Anno series, that of the Roman Empire. Though the gameplay falls in line with what we've come to expect of the series, this entry manages to set itself apart thanks to its cultural elements, allowing the player to chose different paths, both in events and the research tree, and actually feel the weight of the choices for the rest of the game.

Anno 117: Pax Romana successfully expands the franchise, blending the depth of Anno 1800’s refined mechanics with a stunning Roman backdrop. Set across the provinces of Latium and Albion, it challenges players with complex city-building systems, resource management, and strategic decision-making, in an addicting way. The addition of diagonal construction, land combat, and an intricate research and religion system adds new layers of creativity and control. Anno 117: Pax Romana is one of the best city-building management games money can buy right now.

Anno 117 is not the most complex Anno ever made, but it is one of the most enjoyable. The Roman setting is rich, the building system is the best the series has seen, and the cultural mechanics give the game a unique identity. As a veteran player, I appreciate how confidently it knows what it wants to be.
