How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Ledgerbound decides early on what it is setting out to do and as a result it does it very well. Even the technical issues of the pre-release build fail to take out the fully enjoyable nature of the game. In the end, it offers plenty of entertaining moments, aided by a fun set of characters and the excellent performances of its cast, wrapping them up alongside strong and satisfying tactical gameplay to keep players fully engaged.

While the strategic element of Ledgerbound isn’t all that captivating, the humor and dating sim elements should help it find an audience. Especially since the voice acting is so strong. The jokes and even way in which the romantic elements are handled might not be for everyone. I also wish I could actually just… save instead of relying on autosaves. But it’s a novel take on a heroic quest and rather colorful.

Ledgerbound is a bit like a misprinted form, the ink is messy and muddled in places, but you can still make out its function well enough. Repetitive, simple tactics, uneven writing and an underutilised premise meet an incredibly rich array of vocal performances and some charming character exchanges that do much of the work of bringing Ledgerbound’s diverse band of (mostly) endearing misfits to life. Ledgerbound does its job well enough to pass probation, but doesn’t deserve promotion just yet.

It’s not afraid to even poke a little bit of fun at itself, which is quite clear after the final battle. To be fair, some of the humor and crudeness of characters (looking at you Jazz) may wear thin on some players. For others, like me, you may find joy in the characters and their behavior. All in all, the game is quite great for playing who want a bit of visual novel, a bit of tactical RPG, and a bit of choices determine your final ending. I would have given the game a slightly higher score had it not had the bugs I encountered during the review, but I have confidence that by the time the game is in the hands of players, it will be much closer to the 9 and an enjoyable experience for all.

Ledgerbound is a delight to play if you’re the target audience. The characters are colorfully memorable, with personal stories that develop and grow believably throughout the game’s narrative. I love how well-rounded the SRPG mechanics are, as well as how the time management and relationship-building aspects are implemented throughout. It might not be for everyone, but Ledgerbound can be genuinely entertaining if, like its cast, the game’s allowed to grow on you.
