How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 82 | 38 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 96% | 92 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 96% | 91 | 1646 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 90.5, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 2,504 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Is one of the best cozy cooking games available right now, charming, well-paced in its first half, genuinely fun in both competitive and relaxed modes, and full of characters that reward the time you spend with them. The late-game pacing issues and repetitive music are real gaps that post-launch updates could address, and they do bring the experience down from what it could be. But at $11.99 with 15-20 hours of content and an Overwhelmingly Positive reception on Steam, there’s no good reason not to pull up a chair in KuloNiku’s kitchen. One customer asked for a bowl with no ingredients except the condiments. Someone wanted a very spicy tofu dish with no soup. This is the energy of this game and it is exactly correct. For more cozy and sim game coverage, head to our full reviews section.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up is as quaint and standard as you can get for a cooking game, though it clearly stands out with its anime-esque presentation that reminds me of a better-looking Mega Man Legends PS1 era art style. It's cutesy, low stakes, chillax, and is a breeze to play through if you've played a few of these visual novels.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a grand fusion of anime-inspired melodrama and a quick, exciting gameplay loop that feels entirely fresh. Though there’s a little bit of stuttering at times, the endearing story, loveable characters, and delightful aesthetic make this game more than worth playing if you have even a slight interest in the concept.”

“"KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a masterfully crafted, vibrant cooking sim that successfully infuses the cozy genre with a delightful punch of attitude and adrenaline. Managing your family’s historic restaurant while participating in high-stakes cooking battles creates an incredibly rewarding and satisfying gameplay loop. With its deeply charming cast of quirky small-town regulars, extensive shop customization, and mouth-watering art style, it achieves near-perfect simulation bliss. Aside from a sharp difficulty spike in its late-game boss chef battles, KuloNiku stands out as an essential, fiercely addictive, and heartwarming triumph that cooking game fans absolutely cannot miss."”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up!, although far from perfection, is a generally rewarding, fun, relaxing culinary experience with a good dose of depth and a very specific identity.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is one of those cozy games that’s deceptive at first glance: it seems laid-back, but it’s intense, challenging, and deep. It skillfully blends arcade gameplay, management, and social interaction to deliver a surprisingly well-rounded experience, with a carefully paced progression that hooks you from the very start.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a charming cooking game blending anime-inspired 2D art with 3D visuals, offering fun gameplay and memorable characters. Its one real weakness is difficulty, as cooking challenges are forgiving to a fault, but this is nowhere near enough to dull what's otherwise a genuinely enjoyable experience.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! honestly bet any cozy game that I’ve played so far this year. It eased my mind with how I unlock new dishes with the Cooking Mama mechanics. And just like Cooking Mama, it inspired me to make those same dishes and enjoy the same efforts I get in-game. The time spent was each character and the silliness that they invited into the game was superb. With my favorite character in the game being Ume and our orange cat which I named Ka-rat. There are cozy games that invite you to its world to escape the craziness of our real world. However, a cozy game that can bring the feeling of accomplishment and realism with these dishes is a true treasure. I highly recommend to anyone who misses playing Cooking Mama to give this game a shot. I give KuloNiku: Bowl Up! the Thumb Culture Platinum Award!”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a delightfully cozy cooking game filled with mouthwatering recipes, fun character designs, and an intriguing, slow-burning story that unfolds at its own pace.”

“KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a short but solid entry in the world of cozy games. If you like games like Cooking Mama or Tavern Talk, then you'll probably enjoy this. It has a warmth that's perfect for running a restaurant that serves soups. I know I'll keep revisiting this game just for the joy of its cooking system and for the delightful nonsense that is the existence of cooking competitions called Meatbrawls. I sincerely hope that Gambir Studio either expands on KuloNiku: Bowl Up! in the future or that the developers simply continue creating cozy games, because their style is perfect for me.”
