How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 74 | 5 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 78% | 73 | 26 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 100% | 97 | 1 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“A Pixel Story has the potential to be great, but falls just short of capturing that potential. ”

“A fascinating journey through the visual history of 2D platformers, although the gameplay doesn’t always match the quality of the many classics it relies on for influence.”

“A Pixel Story has an interesting concept which is not implemented in the best possible way. Although it still is a good platform game, it could maintain better balance between difficulty and pace. ”

“Charming and brimming with nostalgia, but a little too limited to be truly great. [June 2015, p.59]”

“A Pixel Story is a fun and challenging puzzle/platformer with a great look that evolves as you play. Each generation has its own charm and will remind older players of how gaming used to be “back in the day.” Other than a single complaint about how the game’s text is too small and hard to read unless you’re closer to the TV, I definitely recommend that you play this one on PS4.”

“While I really enjoyed the story line and premise of the game, I felt like the mechanics needed a lot more work and polishing, which took away from some of the fun. All in all I would recommend buying this game if you like classic games, platformers, and unique graphics and storytelling.”

“A Pixel Story is a game that grows progressively harder as it teaches you to be faster, more accurate, and more accepting of the inevitable.”

“A Pixel Story is a hugely fulfilling experience. Its perfectly pitched difficulty ensures that it's challenging but never frustratingly so, and above all, it has that elusive 'just one more go' quality that will keep you hooked.”

“A Pixel Story is a fun stroll through a computer that can be quite challenging at times. The story is engaging and the different characters that you meet along the way are both interesting and original (even if they were inspired by past games).”

“I loved the graphical changes as I went through each zone. The gameplay may be a little simple for some and the puzzles may not be challenging for every gamer. It's a great indie game for any gamer who enjoys platforming, puzzles, and a walk through game development history.”

“Through it can be frustrating and seem downright broken at times, there's still much to enjoy in A Pixel Story. It genuinely has all the making of a great puzzle platformer, but it's sadly kept from its full potential by poorly-executed physics.”
