How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The most enjoyable part of Hatred is when the protagonist grunts "try harder" at his wailing victims, only because it allows me to grunt back, "You first."

Hatred offers a mediocre gaming experience and is definitely not among the top of the gaming industry. If you're looking for a solid action romp that doesn't play at anything, the following game is for you. The rest of you better keep your hands off the title.

There have been more shocking and provocative things portrayed in the biggest blockbuster games than you'll see and do in Hatred. Maybe that's the point. Maybe this is all a garbled commentary on how normalised extreme violence has become in gaming. If so, it'll take something better than this tedious, glitchy shooter to ram the point home.

Hatred isn't fun, interesting, or titillating enough to command your time or attention.

A "suicide-by-cop simulator" of the same level as the abominable Ethnic Cleaning.

Ultra violent and desperate to shock, but this is far too boring and repetitive a game to either love or hate.

With an unimaginative outset, a try-too-hard look and controls that are almost unbearable, not even the most hardened tabloid newspaper should get offended by Hatred.

With bad A.I., design issues, and repetitive combat, what there is to enjoy in Hatred quickly fades to black.

In theory Hatred could have been great but lacklustre development gets it thrown into a pit of mediocrity. It joins a stack of games I played once and never touched again, and that disappoints me on a personal level as I was hoping for so much more.

Ultimately, I believe that the Hatred team simply tried to make something controversial in the hopes that nobody would notice how forgettable their title is.
