How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

As many roguelikes before it, Leap of Fate can be a harsh game where one mistake leads to death and restarting the game. But the developers decided for an approach where your character will keep certain bonuses even after the death, making Leap of Fate less punishing, but ultimately more rewarding game.

A remarkable game that has many things to offer for 20+ hours and some optional stuff which remains interesting past that mark. A few tweaks in balancing and randomizing effects would vastly improve it. Even though it can’t compete with The Binding of Isaac in terms of pure addiction and content, it’s adequately competent as far as action roguelike games go.

Leap of Fate offers a challenging rogue-lite experience without making it unapproachable to less serious gamers. The combination of unique characters, randomized skill trees, and an abundance of interesting Glyph effects makes every run feel like a different game.

Leap Of Fate is a fast-paced and challenging game on PS4 with some roguelike elements that will keep you on high alert. It has a solid level design, a nice cast of characters to unlock, and a good stream of content to play. Can you beat all of it in during your first run of the game? Are you that good?

In the game biz, addiction is but one of the many pathways to success. There’s no easy road to fame, glory and a boatload of bills, just as there’s no one algorithm that will make gamers shut the blinds and keep their behind glued to edge of their seat. But Leap of Fate does appear to have found the recipe for addiction, if not success. Pick it up if you’d like a taste.

But let me tell you, even though I died a multitude of times, I couldn’t stop playing Leap of Fate. Minutes turned into hours as I continued to say, “Just one more game.” While I wasn’t particularly concerned with the exposition (though completing each stage brought a very interesting line of narrative), the gameplay had me hooked. The completely randomized levels and strategizing the selection of randomized upgrades melds perfectly together to create an incredibly fun concoction of intense and furiously quick gameplay that leaves you satisfied. I will be playing this game for quite a while to come.

Leap of Fate was a pleasant surprise in the crowded rogue-like genre and provides a great value for all the variations in play styles. While the game suffers from a sense of repetition after repeated play throughs with enemies and challenges, gamers looking for a solid action oriented affair will have plenty to keep coming back for.

Despite truly ancient visuals, this is the best heir of Crimsonland that I've ever played.

With all that said, Leap of Fate was still a pleasant and an addicting game. I found myself going back throughout the day to kill a bit of time and to unlock a new character or attempt to pick up a new character attribute. This video game is definitely worth the $15.99 it’s currently marked at on Steam and one I recommend despite the downsides highlighted in my review.

If you enjoy roguelikes but want something you can play for half an hour at a time and actually see progress, I strongly recommend Leap of Fate. It has great value, an interesting story, and fun gameplay. If it had a multiplayer component so I could team up with a friend, I’d be giving it a nine out of ten for sure.
