How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is a fun game with great exploration, unique graphical design, and a great fantasy setting. Despite all this, I found myself having a hard time getting into the overarching narrative of a young thief on his road to redemption.”

“Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is a successful return to the Quest for Glory universe as well as a clever, addictive and highly replayable adventure game in its own right. Fans of the franchise will find lots of little references and in-jokes to revel in as they make their way through the substantial campaign, and newcomers should enjoy the well-written, smartly balanced mix of point and click puzzling, time/relationship management and turn-based combat on offer.”

“Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption couldn’t get everything absolutely perfect, but no game ever really does. Instead, it got a whole lot of things just right, which was enough to counterbalance most issues.”

“It's always interesting to see variations on well-worn genres, whether it's in term of a game's tone or even overall feel...”

“All in all, Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is a charming take on the Harry Potter-esque magical boarding school genre. The writing is clever, the world-building interesting, and the puns are omnipresent. The actual point-and-click gameplay is solid if unexceptional, dragged down only by a superfluous combat system. If you're a fan of point-and-click adventures, you'll find a lot to enjoy here, even if the Switch version requires more effort than the PC-based iteration.”

“Even though its adaptation to the Nintendo Switch could have used a better control system - seeing as Nintendo's platform does not have a mouse - Hero U is nothing short of a little gem in the Switch catalogue, thanks to its humour, writing and overall atmosphere. Fans of adventure RPGs have plenty to look forward to here.”

“I found this to be too slow for my liking, but if you want a slow-paced game with lots of idle chit-chat and an occasional battle, then this might be right up your street. The sedate pace and minimalist mechanics will probably divide critics, but this one found it dull and unengaging.”

“Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is an old school classic with a Harry Potter-like twist with it based in a University. I found the game very slow to get into at the start. But after the first three to five hours it started to pick up, and I got the hang of managing the school day better. It’s an entertaining game, with plenty of humour and a story that plays out gradually as it progresses. Hero-U offers plenty of replayability as well, to explore different electives in the classroom and conversational trails, or even romantic options. If you are a fan of the old school, classic, RPG/ point and click this one is true to its form.”

“Playing Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is like curling up in front of a fire with a good book: you give yourself to the story. Bugs and obtuse puzzles aren't enough to detract from what's a unique and thoroughly entertaining experience.”

“Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is undoubtedly a particular game, which clearly is not suitable for all palates, not even for those who are familiar with graphic adventures or RPGs. If caught from the right perspective, it manages to fully capture the player in that fantastic glimpse of Shawn's student life, more precisely in that journey of personal growth to discover a great mystery that has enveloped his life for years now. Faced with a more detached spirit, it will simply be a teen drama game with a rather tedious pace. It is precisely because of this ambivalent nature that I cannot go too far in the final evaluation of Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption; even with numerous graphic adventures in my repertoire, this title didn’t manage to involve me as I hoped thanks to the premises offered. A slightly wasted opportunity which, however, finds luck in its porting to the Switch, in particular thanks to the possibility of interfacing with it using the touch screen, which greatly simplifies things within a graphic adventure transposed to the console.”

“Hero-U: Rogue To Redemption is a funny, intriguing story that Dungeons & Dragons fans may enjoy for the use of abilities and skills in gameplay. The narrative and skill building mechanics are engaging and rewarding, however the game could use a few tweaks to make movements mechanics less of a chore on the Nintendo Switch console. Despite the frustrating controls, Hero-U: Rogue To Redemption is a good fit for players who enjoy a retro-style RPG adventure.”

“You can feel the passion for the classic games dripping from every pore, but you can also feel the budget crunch as the team tried to stay within their means. The world just isn’t as alive as some of the older games, but there are still plenty of joys to be had here with a fair bit less frustration to boot.”
