Review sentiment over time

Weekly positive-review rate (green) and review volume (bars). Dashed lines mark significant patches; the amber line is the start of the current scoring window. Hover the dots to see what drove a dip or a jump.

How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The anime paradigm of Marvel Tokon means the overarching framework of the game is ridiculous even by fighting-game standards.

With MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Arc System Works not only brings Marvel back to the fighting game genre, but also reignites a flame that seemed to have been extinguished. Although the online mode still has some kinks to work out, its frenetic, precise, and strategic combat, coupled with spectacular visuals, makes every match a true spectacle. Marvel is back, and it’s doing so with one of the best fighting games of the year.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is the complete package for Marvel diehards and tag fighters alike. Top-tier presentation, incredibly rewarding single-player modes, and a welcoming onboarding system that makes learning the ropes feel genuinely fun. While launch-window netcode hiccups, unoptimized crossplay, and clunky PC performance keep it from achieving immediate must-buy status, the foundational gameplay underneath is solid enough to stick with it. Once ArcSys irons out the online kinks, Tokon has all the makings of a mainstay that will keep the FGC hooked for years to come.

Fresh gameplay paired with unprecedented production values make for an all-star pairing in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. An accessible gameplay loop paves the way for impressive depth, hopefully securing this tag fighter’s place in the FGC scene for years to come. The dodgy PC port is affecting the crossplay experience at launch, but the PS5 version is flawless and comes highly recommended, with excellent DualSense integration. Meanwhile, the offline experience isn’t quite up to the same level as genre frontrunners like Street Fighter 6, but its various comic book storylines are beautifully illustrated and excellently voiced, with writer Keiron Gillen doing a great job with the scripts. This title is a triumph on the PS5, and a reminder that Sony is capable of greenlighting compelling live service games when it puts its mind to it.

Is Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls better than Marvel vs. Capcom? It is hard to give a definite answer, but Arc System Works’ new game stands out on its own thanks to its excellent combat system, which is both accessible to newcomers and deep enough for veteran fans. It also has a beautiful visual style and plenty of single-player and multiplayer content. While the technical issues are a real problem and some design choices did not fully convince us, overall, this is a must-play for fighting game fans.

The result is a game that doesn't yet appear to fully satisfy the hardcore or the newcomers, but there's absolutely potential here for it to blossom into something really special. If that doesn't come naturally through dedicated players picking apart the systems on offer, then patches can fix plenty of this. That's a cop-out, I know, but that's the modern fighting game reality. As of right now, Tōkon is simply a good fighting game, but hardly something to marvel over.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls comes pretty close to hitting the bullseye for me. It is absolutely stunning from an audiovisual standpoint, while its story mode is also top-notch in terms of both writing and style, despite its repetition in different episodes. Its mechanics are engaging and fun, but the game is also fairly complex and consequently rather frantic, fortunately, there are plenty of incentives to learn its intricacies. And no, this certainly isn’t Marvel vs. Capcom, but then again, it doesn’t need to be.

Marvel Tokon is a lot when it comes to learning the basics and mastering each character. Despite being a challenging title for players that are not that used with the genre, it instigates you to become better and better. Of course, having some of the most famous characters in the pop culture helps a lot with that.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a top-notch fighting game. Easy to learn, complex to master, and gorgeous in action, it's pretty much everything I could have expected from a combination of Marvel and ArcSys. A surprisingly robust single-player campaign and comprehensive tutorials also help it shine, even if you're not interested in multiplayer. The game's notable online crossplay issues are the biggest thing holding it back, but patches have already started to address some of those problems. If you're a fighting game fan, Tokon is well worth checking out. For newcomers, it could be one of the best introductions to fighting games available.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a triumph across the board, at least for the PS5 version. Arc System Works has managed to craft a truly excellent fighting game, combining monumental art direction with impeccable fluidity. The introduction of the shared health bar and dual control scheme make the learning curve accessible to anyone, without compromising the extraordinary technical depth required for high-level matches, which is essential for a title that relies almost entirely on multiplayer. A great title for all fighting game fans and fans of the Marvel Universe.

I played a handful of matches in each offering, joining up with some friends in a custom room, challenged random players in ranked and casual matches, and explored the Open Lobby. Online connections were strong thanks to the rollback netcode under the hood, and I rarely saw any technical hiccups at all while playing on PlayStation 5...It’s here where the PC version of Tokon must be mentioned, as its launch has been, to put it lightly, disastrous.
