How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Based on the popular tabletop game Descent: Journeys in the Dark, Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent manages to capture the mechanical pacing of a physical session. It stands as a technically sound, faithful translation of its roots, but the final product is bogged down by a generic story, wooden voice acting, and flat characters.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent offers an accessible campaign structure, flexible party building, and tactical battles that make good use of terrain. However, its generic story, uneven character roles, repetitive exploration, and overly drawn-out encounters prevent it from standing out beyond fans of turn-based dungeon crawlers and the original board game.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent is the video game adaptation Descent fans have waited two decades for, the turn-based combat system is accessible and tactically satisfying, the Synergy mechanic a genuine win for co-op rounds, even if the lack of narrative depth and launch multiplayer bugs hold it back from its full potential.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent is a technically polished and tactically compelling dungeon-crawler experience that remains true to its board game roots. Those who appreciate tactical turn-based combat, modular mission design, and cooperative play with friends will find it to be a genuinely fun entry in the genre. Conversely, players primarily seeking a deep, emotionally gripping fantasy narrative will likely find the game merely average, despite its mechanical strengths. Ultimately, Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent is not a game for everyone; rather, it is a title tailored to a specific audience that gets exactly what it wants: a digital board game night offering tactical depth.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent doesn’t try to chase realism, but rather embraces a bright fantasy art style, and it works surprisingly well. They’re all different, from old ruins and verdant forests to dark castles and underground crypts. Each has a unique personality.

The tactical RPG based on the board game focuses mainly on exploration and turn-based combat, and it certainly doesn't disappoint in this regard. You'll also enjoy the variety of heroes and their abilities. However, don't expect a deep story or very rich loot.

Terrinoth®: Heroes of Descent brings the Descent board game series to PC with a mix of exploration, puzzles, and turn-based combat in atmospheric dungeons. You play with unique heroes, the gameplay is smooth, and the atmosphere is strong. The game is largely stable, although there are minor visual bugs and strict autosaves.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent offers a pleasant, immediate and engaging experience, especially for those looking for a tactical dungeon crawler without the commitment required by more massive productions.

The combat is decent, making it a dungeon crawler that's worth playing for its mechanics alone. But it doesn't have anything that really sets it apart from the competition. So why not just play Sunderfolk instead?

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent successfully captures the tabletop experience with its highly engaging, grid-based tactical combat. While it sacrifices narrative depth and complex RPG progression for accessibility, it remains a solid and fun dungeon crawler, especially when playing with friends.
