How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Pyre is a unique game that clearly targets a very narrow audience. A mix of different elements and dynamic rituals is very addictive, but as soon as there is practically nothing left on the field, except for battles, Pyre can get you bored. But trying a game is still worth it. Not so often you find something so unusual.”

“Pyre is one of the most innovative games of our time, combining seemingly incongruous elements: visual novel and fast-paced team sport. This combination, of course, will not work for everyone, but even if these ingredients caused indigestion, you will still fall in love with story. A story which brings out the feeling of sweet sadness, like when you finish a wonderful book, and leave your new friends behind. A story where victories can be bitter, and defeats can be bright. A story that can be told each time in a new way.”

“Almost every element ties into the game's overarching theme, which calls into question rules and tradition.”

“Pyre is longer than the previous games from Supergian Games, which allows it time to establish the story and characters and gives players time to get used to battle mechanics as well. Once the acclimatisation period is complete, Pyre blooms into yet another amazing game from the developer.”

“Pyre is a beautiful and well made genre-bender that has all the things fans of indie games love plus a terrific atmosphere known from previous Supergiant Games products. The strange thing is: you play some sort of football but after a few matches everything will be clear and you’ll be feverishly putting together new teams and strategies. Awesome!”

“I do not care for sports games, and yet I adored Pyre. It's one of those games where in the hands of an amateur developer, the idea could have been flimsy and the execution awkward. Supergiant Games constantly shows passion and innovation with each of its titles, and doesn't seem to be afraid to go back to the drawing board when something isn't quite working. Pyre is essentially the high fantasy version of Space Jam, only the Reader is not Michael Jordan and no one from the NBA had their powers stolen, yet the team has heart, soul, and is made of a bunch of rag-tag misfits. It's easy to root for the little guys.”

“In Pyre, you'll see yourself making it through to the end only to realize that you're trying to extinguish an already diminishing flame.”

“While elements like the artwork and music are truly exemplary, the real value in Pyre lies in the tale it tells and the characters who shape it. Dealing with themes of fighting oppression, redemption, and hope, Pyre remains a poignant piece nearly a decade later. Perhaps especially so, now.”

“With Pyre, Supergiant Games continues to showcase their unique gameplay, art style and sound. All of these elements come together beautifully and leave a lasting impression.”

“Pyre is SuperGiant Games' best game to date. It is a compelling, original formula, winch combines RPG and tactical sports where the spell is cast through its character's charisma, the overwhelming options you always have at your grasp, the instant fun of the matches, and through deep, strong storytelling. ”

“Pyre marks Supergiant Games' third consecutive masterpiece. A bizarre blend of genres creates an excitingly original title aided by incredible world building and one of the most consistently interesting casts of characters we've ever seen assembled. This is all further enhanced by some outstanding artwork. Framerate issues and the odd difficulty spike detract from the overall experience, but can't prevent this outing from achieving excellence.”

“Pyre is painted with the same deft brushstrokes of originality and fancy that Bastion and Transistor were, but reaches far greater heights than either.”
