How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Call of Duty: WWII is a good, but sterile blockbuster, which you will most likely immediately forget after one walkthrough.

Sledgehammer Games went back to the roots, but the best part of the game is the Zombie mode, which really has nothing to do with WWII. A step back from Infinite Warfare, but still a fine game.

It aims to tell a story of the brotherhood of soldiers, but it's ill-served by undeveloped characterizations.

All in all, Call of Duty: World War 2 plays like the series' early hits. By no means is this a bad thing, though the overall formula and package is wearing thin.

If you're sick of open worlds, exploration, side-quests and collection XP, Call of Duty: WWII's campaign will entertain you with a style. And then there's a cool zombie mode that is much better than a mediocre multiplayer mode. WWII should remind you the golden times of firs CoD's - in a very good way.

The campaign focuses on the valiant pursuit of freedom from tyranny, the online (when it works) is once again based on personal growth and progression through experience points and loot drops, and then the zombie lark is pure pulp fantasy. This is standard for games, of course, but this clash of tones and themes is rarely as glaring as with WWII. And because none of these disparate components feel fresh or new on their own, it makes the overall package feel even less like the sum of its parts. Perhaps with a more inspired direction, one similar to that scene where Rousseau tensely explores a Nazi headquarters, the seams wouldn't be as glaring.

Call Of Duty: WW2, then, is in truth a bit of a mixed bag, but it’s survived thanks to the continued strength of the core multiplayer framework and the surprising spin on its Nazi Zombies offering which work hand-in-hand to balance out the dreadfully uninteresting campaign. Successfully revitalising historical-shooters much in the same way as EA’s Battlefield 1 did only a year prior, WW2’s purer gameplay is a welcome alternative to what came previously.

Call of Duty: WWII is a great throwback to the origin of the series, thanks to the care Sledgehammer Games puts in each and every development. The studio hast tried to innovate where it seemed impossible to do so, and even with the complexity that comes with the historical event in winch the game takes place, it sometimes succeeds. It is a game that tries to redeem itself in front of both the vet and the noob, and its a risk of an online mode that has its feet on the ground in order to run fast.

Yay… boots on the ground! Hopefully that tiresome, overused phrase can finally be airlifted out of the gaming lexicon as Call of Duty is all about that terra-firma trench foot experience, baby. It will be interesting to see if the fickle game-buying public starts to hanker after the good old days of wall-running and power sliding in a few years from now, but as it currently stands, Sledgehammer has delivered exactly the product that was needed to revitalise the franchise at exactly the right time. Call of Duty: WWII is an explosive return to the series' roots that does have a few minor issues and can occasionally come across as being a bit generic, but for the most part is pretty solid in execution. Whether it's enough to win back lapsed fans is anybody's guess, but the highly polished campaign, habit forming multiplayer, and the satisfyingly creepy zombies mode gel perfectly together to bring a package that should at least appeal to the diehards.

Call of Duty: WWII is a superb return to form for the series, and the best addition to the line-up of Call of Duty games since World At War.
