How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“While it does take a fair amount of patience, Hello Neighbor has all the tension and atmosphere you want from a game primarily geared towards stealth.”

“Despite its bugs and storyline, Hello Neighbor is still a decent game. The puzzles are creative and a lot of fun to solve, the art style is good, and the Neighbor AI mechanic adds an additional layer to the gameplay.”

“Before I bought the game, I watched the trailer. The developers really took care with the trailer, the truth is that not all that glitters is gold. I was very interested in the game, so I bought it. In the end, it was rather disappointing for me and I would have a hard time looking for positives. Eventually, however, one was found. One of them is graphic processing. This graphic is probably not for everyone, but I love the processing, which is reminiscent of animated films for children. Furthermore, I have to admit that at the moment when our nice neighbor was locking that cellar, I absolutely needed to find out what the lecher was hiding in that cellar. But I'm not sure that this particular plot would keep all the players playing.”

“A confused, messy stealth-puzzler with flaky physics and dodgy controls. Hello Neighbor's attempt to do something fresh with a classic cinematic concept is to be applauded, but the execution falls flat. A massive missed opportunity.”

“Hello Neighbor is a stealth game for youtubers. It’s really annoying and obviously unfinished and as such makes a great theme for a funny video. During gameplay I had three distinct feelings: boredom, discomfort and frustration. And sometimes anger when some flaws looked intentional. Avoid!”

“player contests and player vs. environment puzzles. Currently, Hello Neighbor tries to have its cake while eating it too, and everyone goes home disappointed when that happens.”

“Where the problems begin is that within the confines of the game itself there’s pretty well no direction, hints, or clues to what it is you’ll need to do...”

“This is a mess of broken mechanics that has a lot of potential, but unfortunately potential is all that it has going for it.”

“Sticking with Hello Neighbor takes a lot of patience and forgiveness. While the lure of the secret in the basement is a strong one, the glitches, complicated puzzles, and problematic AI all make for a giant slog. With improvements this indie could be a spine-tingling horror game, one which plays on deep childhood fears and leaves a lasting impression, but in its current state, we wish that we'd just stayed at home.”

“As much as I looked forward to this title, I haven’t been this disappointed with a game in a very long time.”

“Please won't you be my neighbor? I'll pass.”

“Hello Neighbor has some good ideas, a dark story which should have been developed further and a number of issues that make it a horrible time the further you progress.”
