How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Rage 2 is not a bad game but it's not a particularly good one either. At its best, this bland open world is overshadowed by glimmers of brilliance in its combat. At its worst, Rage 2 borders on mundane and laborious, taking liberties with your time through meaningless quests and unskippable dialogue. If you value your time, Rage 2 is not a game I can recommend. Its combat is spread far too thinly and the few shining moments of brilliance are dimmed by a mundane tasks and mechanics we've seen time and time again, delivered with more flair in other games.”

“The only reason you might want to buy Rage 2 right now is the bloody, bright, uncompromising fights with the best shooter mechanics in a while. The rest of the product is buried in the monotonous routine of an open world and a weak plot, and will be forgotten, as the original was, in a few months.”

“Rage 2 took the definition of fast shooter to a brand new level and despite its problems, title is able to keep you entertained thanks to its great movement & fighting system. It is just a pity of some unused potential, Rage 2 has aspects that can be seen as a clear extension of the otherwise totally worn-out FPS genre.”

“The best Avalanche Studios game so far, but still a mediocre experience.”

“It's hard not to be disappointed in how little use the Wasteland has for you when you're not dealing in lead.”

“Oh, what a day! What a lovely day! Rage 2 comes screaming into the world adorned with pink neon and a stinking attitude problem. Big guns, fast cars, blood-soaked combat and a ridiculous sense of fun make for one of the most thoroughly entertaining games of 2019.”

“Rage 2 is an excellent shooter, and not much else. Want a complex story? Wrong address. Looking for an original, authentic world to explore, nope, not here. But if you want to shoot, shoot, and then shoot some more, be invincible and also crazy, then hop in, you're in for a ride!”

“The wasteland is varied enough and yet it somehow manages to feel the same no matter where I am on the map. Rage 2 exists, it is playable, and it will keep you busy for awhile. Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot also exists, it is readable, and it will keep you busy for awhile. Do I recommend either of them? Nope.”

“If I was to sum up Rage 2 in a single word it would be ‘fun’. The gunplay feels so good and when chained together with Walker’s Nanotrite abilities you can have a real blast taking down the bandits and mutants that plague Rage 2’s wasteland. While I would have loved a more engaging story and deeper characters I did love the true open world and it’s visual diversity. It’s a big step up from the original Rage and if the team’s take on player feedback, Rage 3 is well on it’s way to being something amazing.”

“A serviceable sandbox shooter with wasted potential.”

“Rage 2 is a great twitch-shooter, an okay driving game, and a boring open-world game. The story doesn’t serve the game in a manner that makes it compelling, or lift it above your generic shooter, and that is a pity as the idea behind this world could be interesting and engaging.”

“Although Rage 2 features fantastic close-quarters combat, things tend to slide downhill once you drive out into the open world.”
