How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Tunic is a game that impresses with its style, atmosphere and intelligent approach to mechanics. The way the storyline and basic mechanics are presented is one of a kind. Discovering the story on its own draws you in. Although it is a challenging game, the satisfaction of discovering its secrets and overcoming difficulties is immense. Tunic is a real gem in the world of indie games.”

“Tunic effectively does almost everything you could expect from a game inspired by the pair of green tunic and Master Sword. But don't go in expecting something more than a pale imitation of those things.”

“Tunic is precisely the short but awesome game that so many players are missing these days. But, even if you’re left wanting more after finishing it, what you get is a meticulously crafted and heartfelt game that deserves more than a few praises.”

“A wonderful game, reminiscent of both the old "Zeldas", and The Witness, and Fez, and other iconic releases. Instead of completely copying ideas, it adds its own unique "chips", thanks to which it will go down in history.”

“Where other isometric games of this sort heavily telegraph areas and objects that you should return to later, the levels here subtly fold in on themselves in ways that are both slyly hidden and obvious in hindsight. Tunic appears unassuming and even a little routine on the surface, but it constantly reveals how clever it is every time it encourages us to take a closer look.”

“TUNIC is a picturesque game with an ideal playtime of around ten hours, during which you’ll sweat blood, lose your cool, and wander the map, but you’ll also discover an amazing world, uncover its secrets, fight relentless battles, and have fun from start to finish. While the game doesn’t bring any groundbreaking innovations to the market, relying on well-established mechanics and feeling more like a return to older titles, it does all of this exceptionally well. The breathtaking world is practically begging you to uncover its secrets and find a massive treasure… or perhaps something else?”

“If you're looking for an isometric RPG with a nostalgic aesthetic and Souls trimmings, Tunic is it: a tough, beautiful action-adventure which rewards the patient and batters the reckless.”

“You'd be wrong to assume the cute fox-like protagonist and colourful world implies Tunic is a relaxing little adventure for all ages, it's anything but. Tunic requires a lot of intuitive thinking and patience to navigate its beautiful world with its brilliant in-game instruction manual. Coupled with an unforgiving combat system that punishes impatience and rewards measured study of opponents, Tunic is a game designed for those versed in old-school adventuring and experienced in difficult, sometimes frustrating swordplay. Given all this and its evident Hylian inspirations, and even with some unfortunate performance hitches and obvious downgrades from the versions on other platforms, Tunic feels right at home on a Nintendo console and we recommend it as a creative and concise adventure that both draws and expands upon some prestigious inspirations.”

“Shouldice and crew looked back to the past and pulled from the present to craft an endlessly engaging puzzle-box that's chock full of secrets, many of which I still haven't found. I can already hear the siren call of discovery pulling me back, and it sounds a lot like ambient techno. Are you curious enough to heed it?”

“Undoubtedly the most well-crafted “tough Zelda” game out there, with tons to discover and learn (usually the hard way)”

“Tunic is a fantastically clever adventure that kicks off in familiar Zelda-esque fashion before branching out to become its own thing entirely. There's an exquisitely designed world to explore here, a great big puzzle-box to probe and prod at as you progress through a story that's got just the right amount of mystery and intrigue about it to keep you hooked in. Combat can be a little clumsy at points early on but it improves as new powers are introduced and the game develops and grows into a surprisingly big, surprisingly challenging experience that's absolutely one of our favourite games of 2022 so far.”
