How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 80 | 4 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 74% | 70 | 1443 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 79 | 11 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 70% | 67 | 2502 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Although Crytek's multiplayer relaunch fumbled on certain launch-window errors and design alterations, Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still the premier extraction shooter.”

“Hunt: Showdown 1896 is an impressive overhaul to a pretty enjoyable game. While the UI has sparked controversy and the team is set to revamp it further, many players have had performance issues on PC that are still present. Regardless, it’s impressive to see the visual enhancements for PS5 and Series X/S that bring the game a bit closer to the medium/high-end PC experience, especially with the jump to 60fps across all platforms. While its rogue-like elements don’t always sit well with me, I can’t deny how fun the game can often be, even if I am dying as frequently as I am.”

“I love the idea of Hunt: Showdown 1896, but in practise it's mostly abandoned by people either sprinting all the time or camping all the time. It's hard to "get good" in this game because, one; it doesn't tell you how to, so you have to watch youtube videos and read reddit threads to figure things as basic as what UI elements mean in the menus, and two; because everyone else is already good and you die before you can get anything done or learn anything. I've made some progress, but doing so was a frustrating and gruelling experience that wasn't entirely down to my own incompetence. If you're a glutton for punishment this could be the extraction shooter for you, but it's hard to recommend to anyone that isn't already embedded in it. ”

“Whatever Crytek had in mind for Hunt: Showdown 1896, they definitely got a bullseye on the target because the game delivers everything it promised, and then there are some more with brass knuckles and no punches held! If you want a gruesome game to spike your dopamine and adrenaline in a way only a few games can, grab Hunt: Showdown 1896. Pick your hunter, choose your loadout, and get to some rootin' tootin' cowboy shootin' 'cause this one's a silver bullet in the darkness of the genre.”

“The latest update to Hunt: Showdown 1896 introduces a host of exciting enhancements. Players can now explore the expansive and intricately detailed Mammon’s Gulch, where the upgraded visuals significantly enhance the map’s appearance. They can challenge themselves by conquering the Hellborn, the newest fiery Wild Target. The Scorched Earth event offers new weekly challenges for additional rewards. Players can also experiment with the updated ballistics in the shooting range to refine their skills before applying them in the field. Finally, they can enjoy the improved performance and visuals, particularly when taking in the breathtaking mountain vistas and water features.”

“A nail-biting triumph that is without equal in the extraction shooter genre, Hunt: Showdown 1896’s eye-opening overhaul couldn’t come at a better time. With unmatched atmospherics, a thoroughly detailed world rife with grotesqueness to immerse yourself in and some of the most keenly honed risk and reward mechanics ever seen in the genre, Hunt: Showdown 1896 is arguably now more essential than it ever was. ”

“The Hunt: Showdown 1896 might be the best extraction shooter out there right now. It marries weapons and traits into a meaningful character loadouts with solid gameplay mechanics set against a gritty, horrific world. But this won't be news to Hunt veterans, to whom this latest update and upgrade will ultimately be best enjoyed. The onboarding experience seems a bit of a bridge too far to really welcome in new blood to mire of the bayou or chill of the mountains. However, if you have some friends to jump in together, and if you're willing to stick it out to really level up in this game, you will surely be rewarded for your sweat and tears.”
