How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“While Ancestors Legacy might not live up to every expectation, it still is a good real-time strategy game. With an interesting story, great battles, and diverse levels, gamers looking for a solid RTS on the Switch should undoubtedly check out Ancestors Legacy.”

“It is not the greatest strategy game in the world, but it can be fun at times. The campaigns are easily the best part of the game, even if the combat can be tedious and buggy.”

“Ancestors Legacy is an enjoyable game set during the Golden Age of the Vikings. It’s an RTS that borrows mechanics from Company of Heroes and tries to use them to its advantage, which it manages to do quite well. However, aside from certain elements and the game’s setting, it lacks true originality, and in some respects, you’ll feel like something is missing. This is especially true since, in some sections, you’re playing more of a story-driven stealth strategy game and are largely limited by assigned units for most of the time. It’s definitely not a game that isn’t worth trying, though, and fans of this genre will surely enjoy it.”

“Ancestors: Legacy is a strategy game full of technical issues that can totally spoil the whole experience. And yet, Destructive Creations managed to to create an interesting and fun game that's not notorious for being forcibly edgy and controversial. It is simply a good, middle-of-the-road game that offers a reasonable amount of fun.”

“When it comes to real-time strategy, representation a bit on the iffy side for Switch, so any new entry in the space is always welcome...”

“Ancestors Legacy makes a comfortable transition to console, serving up an RTS experience that plays superbly and looks the part. Minor technical issues and a moderately cluttered UI do little to detract from the overall action, which is strong across all of the release's main modes.”

“The controls are excellently adapted to a controller, and bring up relatively few issues in terms of unit control. I do wish the core design allowed for more diversity in terms of unit production and strategy, but that hasn't kept me from having some great matches. While some of these issues are inherent to the game while others are exclusive to the Switch version, none of them kept me from enjoying my time with it. Ancestors Legacy isn't perfect, but it just might be the best RTS experience on Switch.”

“Ancestor's Legacy is without a doubt one of 2018's gems; fantastic characters, a unique and absolutely brilliant camera that allows you to get up-close and personal with the action on the ground, an interesting story, a gorgeous world, and wonderfully tactical real-time combat are packaged up into a must-have experience. With a bit here for RTS fans and a bit here for RPG fans, Ancestor's Legacy really is a title that any gamer can pick up and play, though they will be punished for their mistakes. Whether you choose the screaming Vikings or the straight-backed Germans, you are in for a surprisingly deep and incredibly intricate real-time experience.”

“Unique RTS with great graphics, soundrack and some inovations. However suffered by poor balance and frustrating gameplay.”

“If you really, really have to play an RTS on console then you could do a lot worse than Ancestors Legacy. Well thought out controls, appealing visuals, and a solid multiplayer make for a reliable RTS experience. You might never feel compelled to reach the conclusion of the samey single-player campaign but you will delight in just having one more go at flanking your pal's Teutonic Knights with your Hurscarl Warriors.”

“Ancestors Legacy brings the Vikings back to life. The combination of fun combat and interesting missions has created an unexpected gem.”

“Ancestors Legacy impressively translates the often control-heavy RTS formula to the Nintendo Switch, though its RPG elements are nonexistent.”
