How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“A criminal waste of source material that borders on blasphemy, ACHTUNG! Cthulhu Tactics proves that, once again, book adaptations (for the most part) just don't work. Even if that source has tentacles.”

“While Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics doesn't quite capture the intensity of the tabletop game it's based on, it still does an admirable job of doing something a little bit different with the tactics genre. By focusing more on story and the horror aspect of its lore, you get to experience intense close-quarters battles and ranged skirmishes while building on an unknown threat that could appear at any time, and in any form. Pacing problems and a lack of environmental variety can affect how well this all comes together, but if you're looking for a more focused tactical/strategy title on Switch, this Lovecraftian odyssey awaits.”

“The grindy battle system with little enemy and environmental variety is also nothing to write home about. Cthulhu Tactics sounds like an intriguing mix of its two titular elements, but fails to deliver on the promise of either.”

“Cthulhu Tactics breaks the promise of a good game with repetitive and monotonous gameplay. Becoming a victim of its own lack of ambition and a poor use of its original content, HP Lovecraft fans will be disappointed at this entry, as the game buries itself in its mediocrity.”

“Starting with what works each of your squad members has a general role based on their weapons and abilities...”

“A dungeon crawl with turn-based mechanics. Shows a lot of promise but is ultimately bogged down by repetitive combat and shallow character/skill system.”

“Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is, I hope, the start of an interesting genre that blends relatively free-form movement until turn-based tactical combat rears its bestial head. A perfect title for those that are itching something different than their three hundredth playthrough of XCOM 2, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a great way to pass the long days of your holiday vacation.”

“Nazi terror with immortal evil sounds interesting, but it is just simple and monotone tactical game adequate only for beginners.”

“Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a beer-and-pretzels tactical game. It’s not hard or demanding. It’s more like a puzzle game than something like Final Fantasy Tactics.”

“Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is akin to playing a tabletop game with an unimaginative DM who was going through the motions and throwing combat rather than story at my team. This may be an unfair criticism, after all the game sells itself on being a tactics game, but I found myself bogged down in combat situations that felt repetitive with little narrative drive to progress. The RPG aspects of the game are held back by the lack of real character allowed for your team members who were more like chess pieces than scripted individuals. There is so much potential for the four unlikely allies to be developed through dialogue and roleplay, but this potential is not realised here. As it stands, Achtung! is a competent tactical combat game with an interesting setting that promises more but never realises it.”

“For everyone else, Cthulhu Tactics offers nothing new or exceptional, It's like a video game version of junk food that has nothing but empty calories with no nutrition. ”

“All in all, if you’re a big fan of the source material, whether Lovecraft or the board game, there’s something to appreciate in Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, but for those looking for a bit more complexity or variety, your time is best spent elsewhere.”
