How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Shadow of the Colossus AD 2018 is a model remake. All the things that made the original so very special have been masterfully rebuilt and are as appealing as ever. In addition, some archaic elements have been replaced by solutions that are more in line with today's standards.

Shadow of the Colossus is as astonishing as it was back in 2008. Bluepoint Games has reworked its visuals keeping the essence of Fumito Ueda's game, and make this game ascend to be among the best games ever remade. It has a solid framerate, wich solves a particular issue of the original SotC and results in an all-round superb game.

One of the greatest games ever made resurrected in one of the greatest remakes of all time. Shadow of the Colossus remains faithful to the 2006 original, but its presentation is on par with the very best that the PS4 has to offer. A masterpiece.

Despite my reservations about whether or not Shadow of the Colossus needed a remake, I came to a realization during the course of my playthrough that I was simply asking the wrong question. As I toppled one colossus after another, I often found myself stopping in my tracks, awe-stricken by what was on display. I felt the rush- the exhilaration that came in those moments where I was clinging desperately to the colossus and as the sweeping melody washed over me like a wave, I knew that if I could have an experience like this on my fourth playthrough of a game, this was a masterpiece that did not need but rather, deserved a remake as expertly and loving crafted as this one.

Shadow of the Colossus was a generation-defining game for a reason. Even now, a decade after its release, it's one of the most interesting games to ever be released. The PS4 remake is just about everything one could ask for. It retains the same gameplay and same plot but makes just enough upgrades, modifications and changes so the game feels a lot more playable without losing exactly what made it special. There's absolutely no better way to experience Shadow of the Colossus than the remake, and it's a must-play for any PS4 owners.

Fumito Ueda's masterpiece comes back in a glorious Full HD/4K with better controls and better graphics, in an overall improved experience. It was “Kind of magic” more than 10 years ago; it's nearly perfect magic now.

Shadow of the Colossus is a tremendous journey, and one well worth taking and retaking. The visual overhaul is stunning, thoroughly enhancing every facet of Wander and Agro's excellent adventure. Galloping through the tranquil world is always breathtaking; felling a monumental colossus is always humbling. Shadow of the Colossus is a beautiful reconstruction of an already exceptional title. Shadow of the Colossus sets the standard for remakes with its gorgeous visuals, new extra features, and refined controls. The essence of what made it great remains pure and untainted -- the epic battles against the Colossi, the great atmosphere, the amazing sense of wonder, and one of the best soundtracks to grace a video game. It’s a class act that manages to rekindle the raw emotion of exploring the Forbidden Lands for the first time, and reminds us once again that video games can truly be works of art.

Shadow of the Colossus isn't necessarily a game that needed to be remade in such an elaborate fashion, and yet, I'm so glad that it has been. Bluepoint's remake of this sublime and poignant adventure is phenomenal, both managing to stay utterly true to the original and bringing it up to date in glorious fashion.
