How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Demon Turf is a fantastic platformer that’s held back from true greatness by sections of dull and repetitive combat. Push through this, however, and you’ve got a game that rewards daring and bravery, bolstered by wonderful platforming controls that let you string together incredible combos. The visuals are initially a bit jarring, but the character design really shines through and give it a timeless aesthetic. If you’re a fan of 3D platformers from the 'golden' N64 era and beyond, this one is well worth a look.”

“Demon Turf scratches the collectathon itch, but very mildly. Apart from its somewhat unique, quirky art style and setting, this is mostly a mediocre-to-good 3D platformer, with nothing really special about it, and plenty of small (and thankfully not game-breaking) flaws that decrease the fun factor quite a bit. Try it out only if really, really thirsty for a game of its kind.”

“Demon Turf is at its best when it is providing complex platforming challenges. Its movement system is intuitive yet adaptive enough to provide plenty of options and satisfying shortcuts for adventurous players. It stumbles a bit through its combat but ultimately always comes back to platforming. Boss fights, while not incredible, are better than other combat encounters and showcase some incredible art. The performance on Switch is largely great, but when it hits a snag it tends to do so at the worst possible time. But for the rest of the time it’s a great looking, great sounding, and great-playing 3D platformer. This is one of those games where despite some flaws, you’ll find yourself returning to old worlds to clean up every last collectible as you work your way up the demon ladder.”

“Demon Turf is a rather conventional 3D platform game. The excellent level design and the good assembly of simple but effective mechanics make the experience pleasant overall. More could be done on the aesthetic level and on some secondary playful aspects.”

“A solid little platformer with a striking visual style, heaps of personality, and plenty of content to keep you busy. Demon Turf is a love-letter to the genre, and is well worth your time.”

“Demon Turf may not have tantalised my platforming taste buds as much as I hoped for but I can see it gathering a well-deserved following. The community has already shown the impressive possibilities of getting from A to B in style, and I’m sure once the game gets into the hands of the wider public the possibilities are only going to flourish and amaze even more. With that said, the speedrunning community does make up for only a small percentage of the 3D platforming fanbase. So to say Demon Turf is a great 3D platformer for that reason alone is probably stretching it a bit. For what it’s worth though, it is at least a competent one.”

“While it's definitely paying respect and has been influenced by those masterful games of the past: it's much more then that in the big scheme of things. See, what Demon Turf does is understand what made games of the past great and remixes it JUST slightly to feel fresh enough for the genre, while establishing its own identity in the process. While it stumbles here and there with small elements like the sound design and an overall lack of story punch, it makes up for in a game that will keep you coming back to finish all its content.”

“Demon Turf reinforces the 3D platformer genre with an experience that is familiar, yet unique; challenging, yet rewarding; complex, yet engaging. With a distinct art style and superb level design, it is a blast to play, even if the combat is not up to those same standards.”

“Demon Turf is another fantastic 3D collectathon platformer, offering a bunch of activities to complete while also rocking a distinct visual style. There are a few technical hiccups, but they don’t distract you from what is an excellent adventure to defeat the Demon King.”

“That phrase “kind of works” really applies to all of Demon Turf. It’s got some interesting ideas and interesting visuals, and you can see where the developers were going with it all, but the more you play, the more it all seems like it all only sort of hits the mark. Just about the only way that it’s fully on-target is in how well it feels like a 3D collectathon from the late ‘90s, but given there are plenty of games out there from that era, not to mention the past 20+ years, that you can choose from just as easily, Demon Turf feels like it’ll get lost in the crowd.”

“Demon Turf is difficult to master, but when done it is very rewarding. It's one of the best games I've played this year and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.”

“Demon Turf is an interesting and challenging adventure that feels, in the best possible way, like a game from the 90s.”
