How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

It makes things a little repetitive unless you have faith in your ability not to die, which is hard because Willy isn't the most resilient little guy, dying in two or three hits from pretty much every enemy in the early game, when the experience is in its formative stages. Despite these little drawbacks, we were impressed with Willy Jetman. It rises above its derivative title and offers an attractive, intricate, very much hand-crafted Metroidvania-lite experience.

Willy Jetman: Astromonkey's Revenge has given us some fun moments without spending much money. The first big surprise of the Spanish indie development in 2020.

Willy Jetman: Astromonkey's Revenge is a goofy, challenging, and oddly charming 2D scroller that is heavily inspired by retro video games.

An efective, joyful and funny proposal that updates the classic arcade gameplay from the 80s and 90s with adventure elements from the metroidvania genre, lots of humor and a polished pixel art, that moves like a fish in the water between a doable challenge and a fair difficulty game.

It's not perfect, but Willy Jetman has plenty to offer people looking for a retro-inspired game that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you're willing to look past its rough edges, you'll find yourself having a good time.

Willy Jetman: Astromonkey's Revenge is a charming indie shooter with plenty of adventures to be had, but its repetitive music, inconsistent controls and surprising difficulty curve hold it back slightly. Worth a look if you enjoy a challenge, and a quirky story.

Willy Jetman is a good choice if you’re looking for a 90’s-inspired adventure that combines several genres. It needs something more unique as it evolves, but overall there is a lot of fun to be had.

Willy Jetman: Astromonkey's Revenge is a fun old-school metroidvania that features good characters, a diverse array of weapons and a solid implementation of the jetpack as the main mechanic. There are some difficulty spikes along the way and it's world lacks visual variety, but the good mostly surpasses the bad.
