How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a stunning slice of action, and my favourite musou game so far. Lessons have been learned from both Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity, resulting in a game that balances big-time story with top-notch combat that's got proper depth to it. With Zonai devices to play with, a cracking roster, tons of sexy Sync Strikes to pull off, and a ludicrously slick recreation of early Hyrule to set about kicking ass in, this is dream time for hack-and-slash fans and Zelda enthusiasts alike. Yes, map layouts are still a bit bland, and co-op mode is 30fps, but everything else here combines to make for the best entry in this spin-off franchise to date.”

This solid musou for Nintendo Switch 2 leans heavily on a mix of action and cutscenes aimed at Zelda fans. “The story doesn’t deliver a whole lot of entertainment outside of a couple of characters, and it ends up a shame that more curveballs aren’t thrown in that regard, but Tears of the Kingdom fans will get some satisfaction from events that play out in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Flashy moves and superficial depth don’t really change the simplicity of gameplay, but it is still fun, coming alive in co-op and catering greatly to franchise regulars that appreciate mindlessly wailing on hundreds of foes using characters from their favourite Hyrulean races.”

Its story builds on the past established in Tears of the Kingdom, giving it more coherence and emotional weight. Gameplay improvements like smarter ally AI, fuller maps, and new Zonai artifacts make combat more dynamic. While some camera issues and the lack of online co-op contrast with all the good things, it’s still a thrilling and polished experience that expands the Zelda universe in the Musou genre. A must-play for fans enjoying the new Switch 2.”

“Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment feels like a more niche The Legend of Zelda game, but Tears of the Kingdoms fans may appreciate its lore. It’s interesting and attempts to capture the concept of land, sky, and underground spaces from Tears of the Kingdom too. It’s effective in using campaign missions to open up areas of Hyrule, tell its story, and emphasize the importance of fights against named or major opponents. At the very least, we got to see Omega Force experiment a bit with its formula. But in short, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is an interesting Musou game made for a very specific audience. ”
