How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 87% | 81 | 59 |

“Ruffy and the Riverside doesn’t just ask you to beat the level. It asks you to imagine a better one. While a few mechanical hiccups hold it back from being perfect, the game more than makes up for it with innovation, heart, and sheer creative freedom.”

“Ruffy and the Riverside is a challenging game to review. Its collectathon gameplay is a blast, and its mission variety deserves praise. Its audiovisual presentation is equally commendable, paying loving homage to the games that inspired it. However, the elements that surround the core experience, the story, the combat, the menus, chip away at the fun. Hopefully, Zockrates Laboratories UG can use Ruffy and the Riverside as a springboard to greater heights. What’s here is a welcome addition to the collectathon genre; just keep your expectations in check before you jump in.”

“"The right approach and mindset, but the developers need a bit more experience."”

“Not only does Ruffy and the Riverside offer a charming story that is fun to experience up to its very end, but it also offers a beautifully designed world that is full of quirky characters and fun activities to do even after the completion of the main story. Ruffy and the Riverside manages to bring back the charm of the early PS1 and Xbox platforming action games back to life with its own unique mechanics and nostalgic visuals. The Swap mechanic is flawless, and the 2D characters in a 3D world bring out a vibe that no modern platformer has managed to deliver in a long time. It is easily one of the best platformers of this generation and will serve as a foundation for all future platformers to follow. Ruffy and the Riverside is a crown jewel for both Zockrates Laboratories UG and Phiphen Games, and one that should be on every player’s must-play list.”

“Ruffy and the Riverside is a love letter to platforming games that have come before, and I feel like we don’t get these types of creative and charming platformers as much these days. I am hoping that Zockrates Laboratories, the developers of Ruffy and Riverside, as well as other indie developers, keep the platforming genre alive for years to come.”

“Ruffy and the Riverside is a charming and creative adventure that shines with its hand-drawn art direction and original texture-swapping mechanic. Despite its technical and design limitations, it offers a light, fun, and accessible experience, ideal for those seeking something different and welcoming. A game that may not reinvent the genre, but it captivates with its personality and good ideas.”

“Ruffy and the Riverside is an engaging and original platformer that falls just short of perfection because it could have paid more attention to key mechanics such as control precision, spatial orientation, and enemy design. On top of that, it overwhelms you with an excessive amount of dialogue. Because of all this, I actually didn’t like it very much at first. If you happen to feel the same way, please give Ruffy another chance. Once the story gets going and you get used to handling the changing textures, you’re in for some quality entertainment.”

“Ruffy and the Riverside is an enjoyable return to the colourful 3D platforming romps of the late 1990s, and it's one that brings its own clever idea to the table, rather than just simply copy/pasting everyone else's homework. With nods to Mario, Zelda, Crash Bandicoot and more, levels jam-packed full of fun puzzles and the easy, breezy nature of Ruffy's copy-pasting abilities at the heart of it all, this is one of the better odes to this sort of caper that I've played and, performance issues aside, a very impressive debut to boot.”

“You could do worse than with a game [like Ruffy and the Riverside] that actually tries hard to capture that bygone early 2000s era of cerebral-challenging platforming, even if all it has going for is its deft use of 2D artwork onto 3D landscapes. At the very least, this game deserves a sequel that will hopefully iron out its flaws and repetitive moments.”

“While overall this is a competent 3D platformer, the copy-and-paste mechanic can be hit or miss, and the world as a whole often feels thrown together without much of a plan”

“Ruffy and the Riverside cleverly apes classic platformers while delivering a gimmick that makes it feel fresh and modern. In fact, its whimsical nature, built around an intriguing gameplay mechanic, gives it a classic Nintendo vibe. The story sets up for future adventures, and considering this is the developer’s debut title, they are future adventures I would love to see made.”
