How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“We have a solid remake, that simultaneously stays true to the original game, but also gives it a fresh coat of paint. Some much-needed changes are made to both the narrative and the gameplay, even if not all of them will sit right with the core fans. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a great way to experience one of the best games in it's genre in a completely new light.”

“The Definitive Edition may not be exactly the same Mafia from 2002, but that's why this game works excelently. Improved gameplay elements, including beautiful City of The Lost Heaven graphics, are just amazing. Arguments such as: excellent acting performances, great voiceover and with a few exceptions, good balanced gameplay, should be enough to get the Definitive Edition into your gamer's crosshair. Lovers of the original Mafia will enjoy the classic with the new visuals. And those who missed the game 18 years ago have a great opportunity to experience the entire original story in a modern design.”

“Mafia: Definitive Edition excels in absolutely everything. It's unbelievable how the developers have tackled the difficulties, be it the story, dubbing or facial animation. They had to improvise in many parts, and as much as they tried to implement only the best of the second and third installments, not everything could be handled this way. I'm not afraid to say that this is one of the most well-crafted remakes of a game ever made. It is a masterpiece that will not offend players of the original game or newcomers. The authors have reworked the story of the original Mafia so sensitively that you may not even remember the original game.”

That's a long time for any piece of entertainment, more so in video gaming, and Mafia: Definitive Edition is a long way from what it needed to be.”

“Time wasn't gentle to the original Mafia; a remake was a neccesity. I’m glad I could experience this story once more. I completed the game with pleasure, admiring the recreated Lost Heaven, and some really nice graphics. The sequels have nothing on this remaster, and even though some elements could use more polish, this is most definitely a must-play!”

“The Mafia remake makes the original 2002 title obsolete by improving and upgrading everything, which is the whole point. Archaic gameplay, tropes, and controls are refurbished to make the new game and its cast all the better while preserving the core of Tommy’s rise and subsequent fall in the game’s thrilling narrative.”

“Mafia: Definitive Edition is a memorable and excellent story that does justice to both its original groundbreaking title and the movies it is paying homage to. The character and story of protagonist Tommy Angelo is one that is easy to get invested in and this world of Lost Heaven exudes the charm and atmosphere of 1930s New York. Excellent pacing and plot over the course of 10-12 hours mean it will keep anyone hooked. That said, it feels like a game pushing this hardware to its limit and the limitations do catch up with it in a lot of ways. Anyone who has a PC capable of playing the game would be well advised to maybe opt for that platform. Additionally, some unnecessary bugs and controls that can be difficult on a console controller sour the experience somewhat. However, there are not many alternative titles of this genre and Mafia: Definitive Edition certainly delivers a rip-roaring tale for those who wish to experience it.”
