How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“A Total War Saga: Troy is not a bad game, but some of the developers' decisions were quite controversial. However, it will always find its loyal fans thanks to unique setting. And it's possible that later it will be expanded and upgraded.”

“A Total War Saga: Troy is limited in scope and unit variety. Similarly, its middle-ground approach between a purely historical title and one that's filled to the brim with mythological elements might not please everyone. Still, it manages to entertain owing to unique faction leader mechanics and Divine Will strategies. Grab it while it's free, but wait for a few fixes and balancing tweaks if you're planning on buying it separately.”

“Total War: Troy makes some curious changes to the Total War formula, but the less streamlined resource system, extra micromanagement, and weird mix of reality and mythology work against its favour to create a less than entrancing experience.”

“Based on the Iliad epic, Troy appeals to both Total War veterans and players who want to enter the series. Players looking for a good strategy game should definitely try this game.”

“A Total War Saga: Troy is a title that shows ups and downs. Without a doubt it's a better spin-off than the previous one (Thrones of Britannia), thanks to a breathtaking setting with attention to detail. The Homeric victory is infact much more interesting than the classical one. Troy relies heavily on some mechanics but then takes inexplicable steps backwards.”

“Total War Saga as a mini series of smaller scoped historical settings has allowed for incredibly rich myths and legends to be portrayed in a Total War game. Troy is no different. The Total War formula is able to seamlessly integrate itself into the Homeric epic, and the added mythological nature of the original story makes for a diverse range of Heroes and Kingdoms to choose from, making each campaign feel unique and purposeful.”

“Epic conflict from Greek mythology in exciting campaigns, but without improvements in Total war series.”

“A meaty, engrossing strategy spin-off with an attention to detail that is both a blessing and a curse.”

“Fewer vampires and more Greeks! It’s Bronze Age Total War.”

“Splicing history with Hollywood, Troy is an exciting new take on the Total War formula. Sega's immense strategy series continues to snowball, absorbing and shedding new ideas, somehow keeping momentum despite that core gameplay remaining virtually untouched.”

“If you play it for free this is an excellent introduction to the concept of Total War, but as a paid-for product it's a sometimes awkward mix of fact and fiction, old problems and new.”
