How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Mortal Shell is another Dark Souls clone with nice graphics, interesting ideas and good combat mechanics. On the other hand, there's a problems with hitboxes, enemies are too slow, and it lacks epic bosses and spectacular battles. However, among other Dark Souls clones this game looks really unusual and worthy.”

“Despite the fact that Mortal Shell is a game full of mistakes, therefore it isn't one of the best souls-like experiences, it still remains a decent hardcore title.”

“Slow-paced action-slasher with satisfying combat and grim atmosphere. And it leaves you wanting for more.”

“Mortal Shell is a truly great Souls game that deserves its place alongside world-famous titles such as Dark Souls, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. Mortal Shell builds on the fundamentals of the genre, but adapts them to its own form. Battles are much slower than usual, but bring a new level of frustration. The bosses are all difficult and scary, while their fights are accompanied by great background music (especially for Hadern). As for the price of €24.99, I'm not sure if it's justified or not, but I'll leave that up to each of you to judge. For my part, I can highly recommend the game.”

“Mortal Shell unleashes an astoundingly creative new combat mechanic in a brooding and strange world, but its meandering narrative, uninspired and confusing maps, and punishing-to-the-point-of-cheapness gameplay will test the patience of all but the most hardened of Soulslike fans.”

“Mortal Shell gains a lot of points in my book for at least trying something knew in the “souls-like” subgenre, but its limited scope and some odd design decisions about upgrades and leveling makes it hard to recommend to none other than the most hardcore of fans.”

“The lack of depth isn’t too much of a detriment as the game is short enough to ever feel tired. Better yet, what is there is good, a foundation with easy room to be expanded upon and a strong demonstration of Cold Symmetry’s understanding of core concepts that are the strength of the genre. Mortal Shell is a exemplary use of limited resources to make a tight, fun game, even if it only takes a weekend to beat.”

“Mortal Shell takes the best elements of the “Souls-like” genre and refines them into a compact game that doesn’t overstay its welcome.”

“Mortal Shell is a brave soulslike that mix original ideas and fun. If you like the genre this is the game for you. It’s darker than the original soulslike and provides you a satisfying combat system. We would have preferred better level design, because actually is one of the most disappointing things we have seen in this game.”

“Mortal Shell retains the best elements of the genre - weighty combat, tension, exploration, and progression - and succeeds in refining a deep and beloved genre in ways that feel rewarding, familiar, and new, all at the same time.”

“While undeniably ambitious and packed with content, this Souls-like delivers challenges, but not all are intended”
