How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“While it looks and sounds just about identical to its predecessor, it takes a few steps away from the standard turn-based combat system, instead presenting players with a deck-building card battler of sorts. Some will undoubtedly prefer the first game in the series, but the difficulty curve is gentle enough and there’s enough overlap between the games to make it absolutely worthwhile to still give this one a go.”

“Echo Generation 2 represents a bold attempt by the development studio Cococucumber to evolve its IP. The highly inspired art direction confirms exceptional aesthetic talent, but unfortunately, these brilliant ideas are held back by a combat system that, while intriguing in the early hours of gameplay, ultimately clashes with poorly balanced spikes in difficulty. Despite this, Echo Generation 2 is well worth experiencing for fans of tactical challenges and vaporwave atmospheres.”

“Echo Generation 2 is a visually strong sequel with solid turn-based deck combat and a cool multi-character chapter structure, but it suffers from linear design, slow pacing, and uneven storytelling. Fun systems, but weaker exploration and narrative than the first game.”

“Echo Generation 2 features a clever deck-building combat system with a variety of characters and card types and the story keeps you motivated all the way to the grand finale. Personally I would have preferred a slightly bigger challenge in the game and voice acting for the characters would have elevated it to another level. However I definitely had a good time during the six and a half hours I spent with the game.”

“Developer Cococucumber continues their studio love of using voxel tech to deliver a richly, detailed world in Echo Generation 2. Everything has a crisp and colorful look to it, the monsters, with all their mouths and moving parts were genuinely unsettling to look upon but at the same time I thought it had a strange beauty to it.”

“Echo Generation 2 is a game that’s about having goals. It broadens, complicates, and lessens the surprise of the original. The leap from typical RPG rules to a comprehensive deck-building system is a major gamble, but one that mainly succeeds.”

“Despite the missteps, Echo Generation 2 is a bold, imaginative follow up that fans of the original, and fans of quirky sci fi RPGs in general, will find plenty they enjoy in. Just be prepared: the final duel might test your patience more than your deck building skills.”

“Echo Generation 2 is a fun deckbuilding game with a unique approach to multiple protagonists and a number of deep story driven worlds. Unfortunately for all of the phenomenal setup, the back half of the game doesn't stick the landing, instead rushing into an Act 3 that's a simple battle gauntlet.”

“Echo Generation 2 is a compact turn-based RPG with strange character chapters, clear card decisions, and Cococucumber’s familiar voxel style. Its separate hero stories and deck-focused combat make it a more interesting sequel, but short chapters, light exploration, and a tougher late-game gauntlet make it better suited to RPG fans who don’t mind a demanding final stretch.”

“Echo Generation 2 is a pretty adventure that doesn’t have a particularly compelling hook.”

“Echo Generation 2 blends multiverse storytelling, stylish retro visuals, and surprisingly deep deck-building combat into a charming sci-fi adventure. Beneath its colourful pixel art world lies a genuinely satisfying tactical RPG that constantly rewards experimentation and curiosity.”
