How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The Wandering Village is a good choice for hardcore fans of building strategies. But regular players will stop having fun after a few hours, and even lovely graphics and a pleasant soundtrack won't save it.

The Wandering Village is the perfect game to add to your city sim collection, with its random biomes and sizable research tree, it offers its own twist to the genre. The added story was well told and never felt forced on my villagers or me. If you like city builders, then this is a must play.

The Wandering Village is a truly great game, and I'm quite curious to see where it goes from here. Thanks to Onbu, the developers have definitely managed to create a project that, in its own way, stands out from other city-building games. The beautifully rendered graphics certainly help bring it all to life.

The Wandering Village is a worthy addition to the city-builder genre. It's a mostly undemanding hybrid that mixes sim management with a touch of pet care. A slight experience, with an uninspired and slow-moving story, but it still manages to charm in its own quiet way.

The Wandering Village is a lovely game with an interesting mechanic of travelling on the back of a giant creature. While its visual style severely restricts the freedom of building, it adds to the mood very well and sets the game apart from “ordinary” builders. The developers had a vision and didn't shy away from realizing it. It's a shame that the campaign is a huge disappointment for me.

While not the deepest city-building sim out there, its approachability, workable controls, and some unique elements help it to shine

With beautiful Studio Ghibli-esque aesthetics, The Wandering Village is a city building sim with real soul. Beneath it all, there is a really beautiful metaphor at play with a wider message regarding the relationship between a civilisation and its environment.

The Wandering Village has its issues, most games do, but even these issues I outlined never felt off-putting to me. There is an engaging experience here that you don’t get to see very often. Wandering the land on the back of your Onbu, feeling like you stepped into a Miyazaki classic.

The Wandering Village has a grasp of the building blocks of its genre, but never truly capitalises on its core mechanics or its premise. Rather, it presents an enjoyable but somewhat shallow city-builder that just happens to also be on top of a wandering behemoth, rather than truly embracing and exploring what that could mean in gameplay terms. While its visuals and audio are both lovely, there is little here to really sink your teeth into, particularly for a veteran of the genre. The Wandering Village is worth a visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Building a settlement on the back of a large, wandering creature is original, but also difficult. While the interaction with your walking home is interesting, the gameplay could be more in-depth and the story is boring.

The Wandering Village marries survival and city-building atop a living creature with charm and originality, but genre quirks, flat storytelling, and a few design snags keep it from soaring. It’s a thoughtful, well-crafted game, just one that asks you to overlook some rough edges.
