How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 83 | 60 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 86% | 80 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 79 | 34 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 78% | 72 | 1345 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Everspace 2 is a fine adventure, but, on the other hand, joy from its core gameplay dries up too quickly.”

“Already in Early Access, Everspace 2 offers great gameplay, a fun story and a beautiful space environment. If you're a fan of space shooters, RPGs and open world exploration, then this is the game for you.”

“Rare is the sequel that shifts genre from its predecessor, and rarer still is the sequel that lands said shift in a successful and seamless way, but this is exactly the case with Everspace 2. It’s packed to the nines with twitch shooting to keep you engaged, a satisfying loot grind bolstered by diverse item choices, a gorgeous rendition of space to zoom through, and a sizable amount of unique content. Moreover, it’s all wrapped up in a well-executed (if somewhat familiar) science fiction narrative. There’s certainly a blemish or two, chiefly the title’s struggle to pace non-combat sections, but Everspace 2 provides so much of a good thing that it’s hard to mind.”

“Everspace 2 reinvents itself almost entirely compared to its predecessor, focusing on more action-oriented RPG gameplay and featuring intuitive controls, making it accessible even to those not particularly fond of space simulators. Aside from a few minor optimization issues and an environmental puzzle design that occasionally falls short, the game still stands out as one of the best offerings in its genre.”

“Everspace 2 then is overall a competent space-combat based looter-shooter in the sheepskin of a space-combat sim. Come to it knowing what to expect and there’s a good few dozen hours of simple fun to be had, but I’m not convinced it has the systemic depth to truly rival either the looter-shooter or space-sim heavyweights on their own turf.”

“Everspace 2 along with the expansion Wrath of the Ancients provides many hours of quality gameplay and is an essential purchase for fans of space action.”

“If you’re looking for another space-themed adventure game, do yourself a favor and check out Everspace 2. Jump into a new ship as Adam, the clone pilot, and soar among the stars of cluster 34. Take on as many jobs or as few as you wish, and find a place in the ocean of stars to call home.”

“Rockfish put Everspace 2 together with insanely good intuition. They blended components that, in lesser hands, could have either seemed conveniently stolen together or difficult to reconcile and made them into a wonderfully coherent whole. The result is a game that repeatedly makes you forget about time, while you fly from one pulp sci-fi poster into the next, with your mouth wide open.”

“Everspace II is a great trip to the stars and planets, where your spaceship really has a lot of uses. It manifests itself in combat, when completing tasks (sometimes with puzzle elements) and developing the story. It is massive, fun, you will spend dozens of hours exploring the corners of the universe.”

“Everspace 2 brings gorgeously rendered ships and a middling story, but can't quite make up its mind about being a space sim or a loot shooter RPG. Visually impressive, narratively and mechanically constrained, it could have been so much better.”

“I started Everspace 2 deeply unsure about a space looter shooter. Tens of hours later I don't want to play anything else. Everspace 2 is a towering achievement of space-based thrills and spills. It absolutely deserves your attention.”

“Sadly, even if there's a huge map to explore filled with scenic views, there's a sense of emptiness beyond the blackness of space. Everspace 2 is lonely, leaving you to tackle most threats from beyond by yourself. ”
