How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Roadwarden is not a game for everyone, and that’s part of what makes it special. If you want fast-paced combat or endless crafting, you won’t find it here. But if you love rich storytelling, roleplaying depth, and choices that truly matter, Roadwarden is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll find on Switch. It’s a dark, sometimes punishing, always engaging journey through a world that feels alive in both its brutality and its beauty. While the port isn’t flawless, the chance to experience this on a handheld screen makes it easy to recommend to anyone even slightly curious., Asmodeus

Roadwarden deserves a perfect score, but the Nintendo Switch version is not well-optimized for the console. The UI feels a little clunky, and there is a weird lag, whether you are using the touchscreen or the controls for playing the game. Still, if you ignore its laggy UI, Roadwarden is the definition of a true RPG. It shows that you do not need fancy visuals and a 100 GB game size to deliver the true experience of an RPG. The stellar writing and the immersive visuals, although simple, will get you hooked right from the first five minutes, and it makes it very hard to put the console down. At the Nintendo Switch, Roadwarden feels right at home because you can take it everywhere you go, and it will keep you engaged for hours to come. If you own a Nintendo Switch and you love RPGs, no matter what type, Roadwarden should be on your list and installed on your console at all times. It will not disappoint you in any capacity.

Roadwarden is a fascinating text-based RPG that delivers top-notch writing, meaningful and impactful choices, and way more interactivity than you may be expecting from a game of this type. Managing your time, health, armour, and more as you explore and map out a dangerous peninsula gives you plenty to consider as you pick and choose the narrative threads and situations that concern you most.Almost impossible to put down, and definitely something I'll play more than once, this is a genre highlight on Switch that's only slightly let down by a bit of clunkiness on the UI front.

Packed with some of the best writing of 2022, Roadwarden’s story will grip you right from the start. Take your time, read all the entries and get lost in its beautiful and desolate world. It’s the perfect blend of RPG, adventure and visual novel that can stand it on its own against some of the best games of the last 10 years.

If you’re into more classic text-based play, this is an outlier that delivers just that and more, but be warned that the interface and some hiccups can be annoying at times

Roadwarden is an illustrated text-based RPG that blends narrative choice, exploration, and role-playing mechanics. You play as a lone roadwarden traveling dangerous frontiers, tasked with connecting settlements, forging relationships, and uncovering mysteries in a harsh, lived-in fantasy world. The game’s unique interface divides the screen into three sections: on the left, illustrations paint the story as it unfolds; in the middle, text and choices guide your narrative path; and on the right, stats like Time and Vitality constantly remind you of the toll your journey takes and the urgency of your decisions.

I really hope that Roadwarden on other platforms doesn’t have the issues that plague these Switch ports, and if they don’t, this is a cracking game that I would highly recommend. As it stands through, I have to review my experience, and Roadwarden on the Switch or Switch 2 is a janky mess, sadly.

That experience seems even more intimate on Switch 2, allowing you to take the narrative with you wherever you go. Roadwarden stands out as a reminder that intimacy, choice, and consequence can be just as potent in a period where many role-playing games strive for size and spectacle.
