How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“There are plenty of jump scares to be had and a good, varied number of interesting interactions to be made, but the question I always find myself going back to is “but does it surpass Until Dawn?” and the answer to that is no. However, it succeeds in delivering yet another chilling experience that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and remains to be an absolute pleasure to play.”

“The Dark Pictures: Little Hope is something akin to a good rollercoaster ride you can spend an evening or a two with. Sadly, there is not a lot of replayability, due to only one ending, albeit a quite unexpected one.”

“It seems that Supermassive didn't have enough time to fully realize the potential of "Little Hope". There's less interactivity and branching of the story here in comparison to previous studio's titles. This year's project is okay, but Supermassive definitely can do better.”

“The gameplay blunts the effectiveness of the game's aesthetic, because there's no real danger to exploring the environments here.”

“I love horror stories, and I love anthologies so I’m not surprised I’m a big fan of the Dark Pictures Anthology. Little Hope is another solid entry that at it’s core is all about player choice. SuperMassive seem to have big plans for the future of the series, which they’ve been public about, and even with the small tease of the next entry coming in 2021, I’m certainly excited to see how the series continues to grow and where the Curator will take us next.”

“Overall, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope is far closer to Until Dawn than Man of Medan was. It is a horror movie wrapped in a video game shell that makes for a thrilling, tense, and frightening experience whether you are playing solo or with a good friend.”

“Supermassive's latest entry will please fans, but the improvements to its gameplay continue to lag behind the well-crafted story.”

“Little Hope is a fantastic horror experience that really shows what Supermassive can do with the Dark Pictures series. Though it's a short experience and it exhibited a crash during review, it's a fantastically crafted thrilling drama with amazing characters who are genuinely fun to interact with. If this kind of game is something that seems interesting, don't pass up on this experience!”

“It’s a clear improvement over Man of Medan in terms of story approach, and while many will say that Until Dawn reigns supreme, Little Hope isn’t too far off from Until Dawn. If anything, they’re pretty even in my mind. Different where they need to be, but both enjoyable as hell.”

“The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope provides wonderful scares, a tense and foreboding atmosphere, and some thought-provoking moments thanks to a memorable cast of characters. It's a worthy addition to Supermassive Games' series. However, the inability to skip scenes remains the most tedious aspect as was the case in past titles.”

“All The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope wants to be is the popcorn flick of the horror genre. And despite an ending that robs some merit from the experience and intruding load screens, the game achieves that. An interesting cast of characters lends weight and impact to your decisions while the story itself intrigues and surprises. Perfect for an unsettling night in? You got that right.”

“The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope is a noticeable improvement as it spins a mysteriously horrifying tale that still ends up lacking in some areas.”
