How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Baby Steps is a masterpiece of game design and storytelling. It takes the "Foddian" genre and adds a new layer of open-world freedom and emotional depth. You will hate it, you will love it, and you will not forget it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I left my hat somewhere up on the manbreaker.

The title by Gabe Cuzzillo, Maxi Boch, and Bennett Foddy offers a contemplative and poetic journey where every stumble belongs to us and makes us responsible for what happens to us. It is an experience that transforms the resignation of existence into acceptance of the wonderful experience that is life, or the simple need to find a bathroom and a new sofa. Walking, stumbling, getting frustrated, and trying again. That's not just playing: it's accepting the art of living.

Equally infuriating and touching, “Baby Steps” is a triumph on creating a compelling world and also a highly interactable one. A reminder that sometimes you just need to hone a single mechanic extremely well to create a memorable experience. And in “Baby Steps” case, that walking with your own two feet, even in a metaphorical sense, can be extremely hard and awkward.

Baby Steps is clear with its intent on telling a well-grounded story about a manchild who needs to challenge his insecurities. The gameplay that's tacked on and made with the intent of making the act of walking harder than it should does come across as hugely repetitive and tiresome though.

I can’t universally recommend Baby Steps. It’s a niche game designed for a specific type of player, one who finds joy in mastery through failure, who appreciates a weird and wonderful sense of humor, and who has the patience of a saint. It’s a game that will make you want to throw your controller, only to pick it right back up for “one more try.” For me, the highs of conquering its brutal challenges and the sheer uniqueness of the experience far outweighed the moments of hair-pulling frustration. It’s an unforgettable, agonizing, and hilarious journey. If you’re looking for something truly different and you’re prepared to fail, a lot, then take the plunge. Just remember to breathe.

Baby Steps is more than it first appears, offering up a heartfelt story about a man grappling with his insecurities as he's forced to keep going. The intentionally tricky walking and climbing is a lot of fun to grapple with, and there's plenty of silly stuff to discover in the open world setting. Your mileage may vary due to various factors, not least the amount of punishment you'll take as you scramble up the mountain, but it's a journey worth taking for those willing to persist.

Baby Steps is yet another example of a Bennett Foddy game that can test you, frustrate you, and make you laugh at the silliest situations.

Your mileage with Baby Steps will vary greatly. The heavy use of physics and intentionally awkward controls make a game that is designed to be frustrating, even when you feel like you're starting to master the mechanics. This frustration has the potential to be absolutely hilarious if you enjoy misfortune. The absurdity of the cut scenes and how you trigger them only makes the game even funnier. The lack of expected quality of life features somehow makes the game feel more enjoyable. If you frustrate easily and lack the patience to deal with intentional jank, then this game isn't for you. If you are prone to laughing at silly mistakes, then you'll be rewarded with a distinct experience that's worth checking out.

Baby Steps is unconventional in every way: a strange and unique gameplay style, a difficulty that is sometimes fun and sometimes frustrating, and sarcastic dialogues that hide deep messages beneath the surface. It’s an experience that may make you laugh or may leave you discouraged, but it will definitely be unlike any other game you’ve played before.

Baby Steps surpassed all my expectations and even small grievances to become a thrilling, trying and memorable journey about being better and learning to ask for help. It’s certainly one of the harder ‘one of those’ types of ragebait climbing games, but each step it makes in tackling this niche is as deliberate as the ones you’re making as the clumsy Nate. What’s within is a refinement of the subgenre, providing a layered and surprisingly poignant world and story to explore. Bennett Foddy and co. have made their opus here, and even with every plummet and misstep I made, I had the best experience in the space I’ve ever had, uniquely hating, loving, loathing and delighting in it. If the devs are reading this, I hate you guys. But also, I bloody love you.

With intentionally difficult physics-based gameplay, Baby Steps can bring out the worst or best in you. If you're willing to gel with the QWOP-style controls for a sense of self-accomplishment, with an absurd but impactful story, then it may just be worth tripping over yourself for.
