How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 75 | 56 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 96% | 91 | 361 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 98% | 94 | 153 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.1, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 734 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Gecko Gods is a fairly low-priced indie made with love, and I respect the team and what they've achieved even if I was frustrated for a lot of the experience. Some people will love the novelty of playing as a gecko. For me, although I made my peace with the decision, I do wonder if a slightly different approach could have increased my own engagement and made me believe more in what I was being asked to do.It's difficult to tell whether some of my frustrations come down to simply taking the wrong turn, or whether I missed a single line of text somewhere that might have set me on a more reasonable path. But I don't think I missed anything. If you want a short puzzle experience, and you like the idea of playing as a gecko, then Gecko Gods may well be worth your time.”

“Ultimately, I can’t be too hard on Gecko Gods. It is a soft, gentle little thing of a game, not too expensive and offering exactly what it says on the tin. My issues with the game and how it makes use of its protagonist (or doesn’t) is not a fatal flaw. But it does mean that the game that I was hoping for turned out to not be the one that I got, and that means there’s kind of a harder ceiling on it than there might otherwise be. If a chill sort of adventure game wherein you happen to be a gecko sounds like a good time to you, then you are going to enjoy this game. It provides exactly that. Just be aware of what exactly you’re queueing up when you start in on the game.”

“While it has some graphical quirks that can be distracting at times, this pretty chill mix of exploration and puzzle-solving without any clear threats is a nice change of pace”

“A thoughtful adventure that never quite reaches its full potential. Gecko Gods has a gentle charm that shines through its cosy visuals, calm music, and relaxed approach to exploration. There are moments when everything comes together and the world feels peaceful and inviting. At the same time, the movement issues, camera problems, and technical hiccups make the experience feel uneven. It is a game with a lovely idea at its heart, but one that sometimes struggles to support it. Even so, there is still something enjoyable here for players who like slow paced adventures and do not mind a few bumps along the way.”

“To put it all in a joking manner, Gecko Gods feels like what would happen if Gex took a bit of a chill pill and went on a vacation, then reverted to some of his basic instincts instead of spy skills.”

“Featuring a cute lizard protagonist and an imaginative archipelago of puzzles, Gecko Gods is just too rough around the edges to earn its stripes. At its best, it emulates the same wonderful feeling of free exploration you get from the Zelda series, but these moments struggle to shine through frustrating controls and low graphical fidelity.”

“Gecko Gods is a chilled out joy to play. Perfect for a lazy summer evening with a cold drink and a fan in your face, the sheer thrill of discovery is absolutely nailed here. While there may be times that you're not quite sure where to go, the focused level design and island layout means that exploration is always enjoyable and you'll find the way forward soon enough. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic treat or simply want to hang out with a cute little lizard for a while, Gecko Gods is sure to delight.”

“Gecko Gods was well worth the wait. I found this lizardy adventure to be fun, gorgeous, and very engaging. The puzzles are fun, and the main character is so well animated that it feels real. I did have a few issues with the camera, but the rest of Gecko Gods was so perfect that I didn’t mind. It is one of the best games I’ve played so far this year, and I know other puzzle game lovers will enjoy it as well.”

“For the most part of the adventure, I really had a lot of fun slipping into the skin of the little gecko, climbing across pillars, walls, and ceilings, and of course exploring the entire world and solving a few little puzzles. But at the same time, something was simply missing, and I don't mean my sense of direction. Because beyond that, I was also lacking a bit of variety and, above all, substance.”

“Gecko Gods doesn’t provide much challenge, with repetitive puzzles and trivialized platforming thanks to its generous movement mechanics. That won’t be a problem, however, if you’re just looking for a cute, relaxed experience. Chances are, if you were drawn to this game because of the cute gecko you can play as, the title has everything you’d want, if not much more.”

“Gecko Gods is a small game with a lot of heart, built with sensitivity and with a clear idea of what it wants to offer, but which never leaves the rather limited and simplistic tracks.”
