How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Offering a great balance of battling and managing, Cult of the Lamb offers you the best of both worlds and provides you with enough of each genre to make it an engaging experience. Its colony management elements may not be as intricate as you would hope, but it does offer a good amount of customization and freedom to shape your cult how you want.

Overall, Cult of the Lamb is a breath of fresh air. In a gaming world full of roguelikes, this offers a different take on the genre, mashing it with a management sim that is oh-so-much fun. The cutesy graphics help tone it down, but don’t be mistaken, this is a dark game at times; it’s also a must-play title if you’re looking for something new and different.

Cult of the Lamb combines two genres to great effect, with fun roguelike gameplay and plenty of colony sim mechanics to play around with too. That said, each does have its fair share of problems.

Working at the camp can be frustrating sometimes, but despite that Cult of the Lamb is a fun and original title.

Massive Monster’s Cult of the Lamb plays like an inventory of half-understood mechanics from other games.

Cult of the Lamb definitely deserves a place among roguelike giants like Hades and The Binding of Isaac, and while it doesn’t quite match their quality, it can hold its own as a close contender. The combination of fast-paced combat and managing your own cult works incredibly well, and the entertaining gameplay will keep you hooked. After all, who wouldn’t want to sacrifice their greatest enemy on the altar, feed them food made from questionable ingredients, or lock them up in prison as a preventive measure to the mockery of everyone else?

Despite some mechanical gripes, Cult of the Lamb is delightfully blasphemous in the best of ways, from the creepy-cute visuals to the fast-paced roguelite combat to the engrossing base building. Being a possessed sheep leading an evil cult has never been so much fun.

Cult of the Lamb proves to be a remarkably fresh take on the roguelite genre, not just in its goofy and creepy aesthetic, but in its smart blending of action and survival mechanics. Gameplay remains tense without ever feeling like it's unfair and a steady stream of unlockables and collectables ensure that your efforts are always rewarded. It's just a shame that the performance isn't up to snuff, at least at launch, as that's really the only major complaint that we have here. We'd still give this a hearty recommendation to anyone who thinks it might be up their alley; it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Cult of the Lamb proves itself to be a great new addition to the Switch library.

Cult of the Lamb is a fantastic new indie title from Devolver Digital that revels in the absurd nature of its setting. The art style is amazing, and generally, everything about the premise and atmosphere is phenomenal.

Cult of the Lamb shows that mixing management and dungeon crawling works extremely well if you know which better parts to take of each genre. It grabs you until the end. A fantastic effort by Massive Monster and one the team should be proud of.

Cult of the Lamb is a very solid, pleasant rougelite game with unforgiving gameplay and some brutal sequences that will leave an impression only once. And it has a fair base price. But it’s NOT for kids.

I truly believe that Cult of the Lamb is a must-play game of 2022, and you don’t have to be a fan of rogue-lites to enjoy it or to appreciate what makes it unique.
