How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 100% | 97 | 2 |

“This is the perfect combination of cute aesthetics and rage-inducing challenge. The adorable color pallet and playable fox characters caught me off guard. After struggling with certain levels, I was convinced that I had just lost my skills until I felt the need to look up the genre and, lo and behold, the words “Precision Platformer” graced my eyes.”

“Kitsune Tails presents itself as a charming homage to classic NES and SNES era platformers with an adorable Queer story, and hides underneath a deep and challenging double album of platforming goodness with a second campaign focused on speed and precise movement, all the while featuring a simple level editor to boot. Despite borrowing a little too much from some classic platformers, I feel like genre fans and speedrunners are going to have a field day with Kitsune Tails.”

“Kitsune Tails is trying to refine, rather than reinvent the wheel, and offers a short but sweet platforming adventure alongside a story of love and friendship.”

“Kitsune Tails is a fun 2D platformer with a number of levels that will get your blood under your nails. The graphics and soundtrack take you back in time when everything was simpler and, above all, happier. If you don't feel like dealing with all kinds of complex systems or if you want a glimpse into what games used to be like, then this is not a bad game to try.”

“Kitsune Tails is a charming 2D-platformer that I just adored playing. While it may have been more difficult than I had initially envisioned, completing the game to the end was worth it, if only to see Yuzu and her friends’ stories come to a close in a heartfelt way. Kitsune Games and MidBoss have given players a wealth of tools to create some cool levels and minigames, and I cannot wait to see what players create!”

“Obviously, the big draw in Kitsune Tails isn’t meant to be the gameplay, you don’t make the focus of your game a lesbian love triangle between two mythical creatures and a sorceress if you aren’t hoping to draw in fans who want a meaty narrative at the core of their games. But while that may be fine for a visual novel, if you’re trying to sell a 2D platformer you need good gameplay too. And even if Kitsune Tails borrows liberally from one of the best of those ever made, it doesn’t come anywhere close to living up to its inspiration.”

“Despite some balance issues and the one aforementioned glitch, overall, I had a blast with Kitsune Tails. Though it purportedly can take anywhere from 15 to 20 hours to beat, I’d say hardcore platformer fans can beat it in half that time. Just don’t expect it to be a simple task because some of the stages required me grinding for coins and buying the right transformations just to have a fighting chance. That said, if you enjoy retro platforming and are looking for a rainbow-colored take on the genre, you can’t go wrong here.”

“More than a simple clone, Kitsune Tails manages to bring good ideas to the traditional platformer genre. The easily recognizable gameplay is used to offer a good dose of variety and challenge, including creative bosses, very beautiful areas and an interesting story. Though it may have missed on more impactful qualities, it's a gun game for your library and a must for fans of classic 2D games.”
