How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Taxi Life becomes another addition to the long line of unpolished simulators. Barcelona may be a lovely city entire of sun, but a strange driving model, monotonous conversations with passengers, and repetitive tasks ruin the overall experience. A little more effort could have made the final game much better. Right now, though, it is an experience meant only for actual city driving enthusiasts.

Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator is a pretty addictive new addition to the genre, but it's giving us a rough ride at launch. It does the basics well for the most part, and features an impressively large and detailed version of Barcelona to cruise around in, but the unintelligent AI drivers, poor performance and various other irritations are significant drawbacks. This has all the potential to be a good (or even great) game, but it's going to take a few patches to get there.

Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator is a realistic simulation of the life of a cab driver. You can explore a marvellous model of the city of Barcelona. Unfortunately, the experience is not without its problems. Handling requires a number of adjustments in order to be enjoyable, while the artificial intelligence creates a real sense of frustration. Missions also remain, for the moment, rather repetitive and offer very little variety. Perhaps I'd advise you to wait for future updates before embarking on your new career.

Taxi Life has so much promise, but in its current state it’s extremely hard to enjoy. Some menu options still have Xbox buttons assigned to them, press A, we were told. One accident we were in saw our car flipped onto its back (maybe the road rage had gotten to us at that point), and we had to quit the game and reload just to be able to move the taxi again. The lack of polish feels evident throughout the game, and it’s a real shame, because the concept is a compelling one.

Taxi Life fails at everything. The performance is very poor, the AI makes gameplay very difficult, and the recreation of Barcelona falls very short in terms of scale. It needs time and a lot of work to become the game it should have been.

There is an enjoyable game here, buried, somewhere, wanting to break out, but it’s not highlighted even before you factor in those issues. The AI was bad and often hindered you, and there wasn’t much more than what the game promised on a base level. If you’re looking to unwind for an hour or two, here and there, Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator might fit the bill.

The core game on offer with Taxi Life is decent if not great and the game undoubtedly has potential to improve. It’s just really not there yet and could have benefitted with more time in the oven rather than releasing in a poor state and patching it after the fact.

Taxi driving in Barcelona looks good. Unfortunately, it's also the first and last positive thing we can say about this game. As soon as you pass a few kilometers, the enthusiasm dissipates like steam over a pot.

Ultimately, Taxi Life is a cool concept that sets itself apart from something like the more hectic and beloved Crazy Taxi and deserves the same level of execution and resources as Asobo Studio’s Flight-Simulator series. Unfortunately, the technical shortcomings shine through the most, which takes lots of points off this otherwise unique and interesting experience.

Taxi LIfe: A City Driving Simulator is a really good idea for a game ruined by a lack of goals, bad area design, optimisation issues, and awful controls.

Overall, my experience with Taxi Life: A City Driving Silumator wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly impressive either. It's a solid simulation game that fulfils its purpose, but doesn't offer anything new or exciting. If you're looking for an average pastime, Taxi Life could be an option.

Taxi Life could have been a marvellous experience if it had been able to realise the simulation it promised efficiently. As it stands now, it leaves us unenthusiastic and leads to existential crises.
