How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 65 | 26 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 92% | 86 | 349 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 95% | 90 | 9 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Biomorph manages to combine the classic Metroidvania formula with just enough of a twist to make an interesting game of this genre in 2024.”

“There’s a lot to love about Biomorph. The animation is stellar, and the cutscenes feel like something right out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The combat is the game's highlight, with the morphing aspect the centerpiece. Those who enjoy challenging Metroidvanias will certainly love Biomorph.”

“As a whole, BIOMORPH doesn’t live up to the unique promise of its killer creature designs.”

“A smart and unique take on Metroidvania play with plenty of puzzle-solving and fun taking on the form of other creatures, but not perfect”

“While the game lacks polish on several occasions, it is nonetheless a valiant effort and a worthy first opus. There's no doubt that the members of Lucid Dream grew up on Super Nintendo classics, and their love for the medium is felt. Biomorph is an amalgam of influences, old and new, that doesn't always manage to reveal its own identity, but remains an interesting detour for fans of metroidvanias.”

“In BIOMORPH, you must use your skills to explore a vast, varied world. Solve puzzles and platforming challenges, fight deadly monsters and take their shapes to use their powers. But beware, every conquered creature can come back with new and even more threatening powers. You will level-up your character, Harlo, as you fight through the vast areas around the city, collecting new abilities, mementos and blueprints. The journey will reveal surprising and alarming truths about our hero’s own origins. Steam version reviewed. Despite good visuals and a strong start, Biomorph eventually neglects its most interesting mechanic and becomes tedious. In the end, despite its best efforts, it ends up being just an average attempt at an already crowded genre.”

“Biomorph brings a faster paced, science fiction aesthetic to the Soulsvania formula. It offers fun gameplay and an interesting piecemeal narrative despite a few mechanical rough edges.”

“While I enjoy the characters and animation, BIOMORPH doesn't bring many new elements to the metroidvania genre. If you're looking for a new entry point, then BIOMORPH could be a great choice, but veterans may be left wanting more.”

“BIOMORPH is a metroidvania with good ideas and still enjoyable, but which however fails to totally overcome average standards and entertain enough to reach the general public.”

“BIOMORPH is a fantastic Metroidvania with souls-like combat that incorporates some interesting mechanics to make its combat stand out. It has a great setting and story, but the Kirby-like gameplay, where you can assimilate and take the form and abilities of other creatures while using them to destroy enemies or get past obstacles you couldn't before, is fantastic. It an feel a bit hard at times, especially in combat, but it's a great time overall. And even though it has weird slowdowns from time to time in bigger maps, it plays extremely well, and I can't recommend it on Steam Deck enough!”

“BIOMORPH is a great option for anyone wanting to ease themselves into the metroidvania genre. Its biomorphing mechanic presents enough originality to make it stand out from the pack, and the added element of city-building also felt fresh. Overall, BIOMORPH is perhaps only second to Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist in the best metroidvanias I’ve played so far in 2025 on the Nintendo Switch, and that is an impressive feat as I’ve played quite a few!”

“Lucid Dreams Studio's Biomorph is a solid Metroidvania that should definitely scratch the itch for any fan craving more from the genre, and with a neat Kirby gimmick to boot. Its strong platforming and level design elevate Biomorph's otherwise straightforward approach to the genre, while its main issues mostly come from a desire to see the game do more with its concepts. Despite some lacking elements that do take away from the overall experience, there is nothing here that stops Biomorph from being an easy recommendation in a genre already filled with great releases.”
