How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Last Train Home may have its issues, but the gameplay is fun, the RTS train management side of things is super cool, and it’s all tied together by an engaging narrative.

Last Train Home had a lot of potential thanks to a great idea. However, Ashborne Games for some reason focused not on polishing gameplay, but on silly nonsense about revolutionary Russia.

Last Train Home is an exciting combination of genres, reminiscent of the Commandos or Frostpunk series. Still, the game goes its way and is worth playing. The UI design slightly throws a spanner in the works, and the stealth could be more elaborate. However, the game makes up for these flaws with its originality and connection to actual historical events.

The Ashborne Games team shines with Last Train Home, a title with a lot of personality and attention to detail, where strategy and management coexist in a fantastic balance. All packed with an immersive narrative, based on historical facts that are not usually treated within the medium. A true marvel on rails.

Last Train Home is a well-crafted RTS with elements of management and survival that tells the story of Czechoslovak legionnaires with a simple wish to return home. The stylistic execution, including the visuals and audio, is excellent, and thanks to the ability to customize how you want to play and what you want to focus on, the game will appeal to both real-time strategy enthusiasts and story lovers alike. The game is held back slightly by some technical issues, which I believe will be resolved to perfection very soon.

Last Train Home is primarily a product of love, a sincere testimony of the soul. Not only is it based on a widely unknown historical event, it's also an RTS, a category that has been out of the commercial spotlight for decades. The makers of the Ashborne Games studio didn't have commercial success as a priority; their motives were purer. The result, at least in terms of quality, does them justice.

Last Train Home is a wonderful, highly original game, created by the people fascinated by the epic struggle of their grandfathers. This is a true labor of love, with the potential to resonate even with people unfamiliar with European history.

Last Train Home is great for those who want to maliciously plan everything else and manage a spreadsheet of resources and logistics. Things will be taken slowly, almost at a snail’s pace, to avoid roadblocks. Those who want to rush into action will likely quickly kill the entire Czechoslovakian Legion. This can easily accumulate with loading back dozens of hours if you can even figure out which save file that was.

War never changes; trains are always going to be running late, though. Last Train Home lets players experience the trials of band of soldiers on a 9000km journey home. This management game is no walk in the park and considering the subject matter this is for the best. If you’re familiar with RTS games then this is going to hit that sweet spot just fine. If you aren’t familiar with the genre but find the narrative compelling then be ready to play stealthy and fiddle with the difficulty settings. Last Train Home requires time but if you’re willing to persist and jump on the train, then this ride might find space within your real-time strategy game library.

A title that succeeds in blending its story with the in-game narratives the player creates is a rarity and Last Train Home achieves it with aplomb. Some minor gameplay and visual stutters aside, this is a steamtrain built to withstand any hardship. Challenging combat missions, deep management gameplay and a phenomenal recreation of 1910s desolate Russia make this train worth boarding.

An arduous train journey, but one that is convincing and demanding in terms of gameplay and challenges you with tactical planning.
