How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 72 | 83 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 86% | 79 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 63 | 33 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 84% | 77 | 29 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Caravan SandWitch is a narrative-driven exploration game on a quiet planet with no combat that made me question my gaming impulses.”

“Developed by Plane Toast and published by Dear Villagers, released on September 12, 2024, for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5. Caravan SandWitch invites us to embark on an introspective journey into the heart of Cigalo, a post-apocalyptic planet where nature is slowly reclaiming spaces once dominated by humans.”

“A very convincing title in terms of plot and gameplay, albeit with a few technical flaws that the developers will surely resolve on day one. We recommend Caravan SandWitch for a peaceful and quiet new adventure, great for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.”

“Caravan SandWitch is a small-scale open world adventure that delivers a tale that’s as heart warming as it is sombre; it’s filled with nuanced relationships and impressively deep lore, and I found it a joy to experience. There’s little to fault about the cosy, risk free gameplay except that it simply may not be to everybody’s taste, but for me, it makes a nice change of pace to a landscape that’s currently bubbling over with ultra-tough soulslike adventures. Pottering around in your beat up old van and doing good deeds for people feels genuinely rewarding, and exploring the final abandoned outposts of civilisation on Cigalo offers a sense of adventure that’s so much bigger than its 10-15 hour runtime.”

“An enjoyable mix of exploration and some adventure without much stress, but that also makes it less memorable”

“Caravan SandWitch is exactly what it markets itself to be, a stress-free, relaxing 10-hour romp through a beautiful wasteland filled with heartfelt stories and colorful characters. While its repetitive quest design, iffy PC performance, and technical issues prevent the game from achieving its full potential, Caravan SandWitch offers a pleasant experience that all demographics will be able to pick up and enjoy.”

“Caravan SandWitch is just a really pleasant video game. It can be a bit rough around the edges in terms of animations and technical performance, but its story intrigues, and its atmospheric brand of exploration is largely a delight.”

“In the end, Caravan SandWitch is a game for those who don't want to get into trouble and want to enjoy an interesting story with a simple design and mechanics, perhaps even for those who want to get into video games, but not in a such a deep level. The sense of freedom and exploration is well achieved, although the proposal does not take long to expose the resources that, in my opinion, lengthen it more than necessary”

“In Caravan SandWitch, I explore a beautifully broken world with my caravan in search of my missing sister. I upgrade it over time, which allows me to progress further and further. At the beginning, I enjoyed the calm gameplay. However, it quickly became repetitive and felt more like work than fun. Thanks to the great story, however, I stayed with it until the end. If you like relaxing games and short Metroidvanias, I can recommend Caravan SandWitch. Everyone else should keep their hands off it.”

“Caravan SandWitch is the cozy twist in gaming we all need occasionally. Anybody who enjoys a great story and some good music will absolutely adore this gem simply due to how much charm everything oozes. However, you’ll need to prepare beforehand for what might be a genuinely touching story that will hit a little too close to home.”

“The game is a simple yet effective open-world exploration game that focuses on quality over quantity. The story doesn’t quite land for me and the cast is so big they became forgettable, but there’s an undeniable amount of charm present in it all. Caravan SandWitch respects your time above all else whilst catering to your 100%ing needs and I wish more games would follow suit. If a low-stakes open-world game is what you’re after this year, then Caravan SandWitch is a pretty good one to check out.”
