How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

First and foremost Forgive Me Father is fun old-school FPS.

The game is colourful, fun (at least for me) and appropriately dark and horrific. There are plenty of interesting adversaries, from classic zombies to Cthulhu monsters. There's also a variety of environments, so you can look forward to a hospital, a church, a castle, or a city development. So don't be afraid to immerse yourself in a world of madness inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's worst nightmares.

Forgive Me Father runs at a brisk clip as well with no performance issues at all. Regardless of how many sprites were been chucked at me, the game ran flawlessly. However, that seems to come at a price where resolution is concerned. The game does seem to be using a dynamic resolution which looks to be very aggressive while also kicking it at strange times. I’ve been surrounded by hordes while the resolution looked great while at other times, with one or two enemies on screen, the environment would look terribly smeared.

Forgive Me Father offers an evening or two of fast, somewhat fun, but mostly simplistic and repetitive FPS action, served along a paper-thin pseudo-Lovecraftian tale that few will care about. Once these one or two evenings are done, there's no reason to keep on playing this nice, but otherwise forgettable shooter.

Forgive Me Father was a game I didn't know at all, but as soon as I saw it it captivated me right away, and I'm glad I was able to experience this game as it not only brings with it a dose of nostalgia, but adds a layer of its own, both creepy and euphorizing. This is definitely a product that Byte Barrel should be proud of.

These faults weren't enough to deter me from sinking over 10 hours into Forgive Me Father. There's a lot to love about the game, especially if you turn down certain elements in the audio options. Classic shooters live or die on a handful of core elements, and for the most part, Forgive Me Father meets those needs: a strong shotgun that decimates enemies, fast-paced action that constantly has you adjusting tactics, and hidden secret areas scattered across the levels. Some of this falls to the wayside when you're craving the next ammo drop that the game refuses to provide you, but it's an otherwise enjoyable shooter that's dripping with character. It provides plenty of joy with a dose of Cthulhu madness on the side.

Perhaps Heavenly Father will forgive us for the violence we commit in this retro FPS full of monsters, weapons, and comics animations.

Putting special focus on the visuals has put Forgive Me Father in a different class from most boomer shooters and this coupled with magnificent sound effects delivers a unique atmosphere that elevates the high speed action that is the signature of this genre.

Forgive Me Father mixes the tried and true mechanics of classic FPS's with an atmosphere so thick it couldn't be cut through with a hail of bullets.

Forgive Me Father is basically mix of Lovecraft and John Romero and if that is something that sounds appealing to you, you shouldn't be disappointed.

What Byte Barrels has launched is more than good enough for now. Its pulpy comic book take on cosmic horror and retro shooters is a winning combination. Yes, it’s nowhere near the first game to utilize Lovecraft or a retro aesthetic, but crucially, it does so on its own terms.

Forgive Me Father is a painfully average shooter that has a lot of good ideas on paper, but never executes them effectively. As a result, its disjointed areas, upgrade system, and overall level of polish leaves much to be desired.
